Chiefs Just Revealed What Their New $3 Billion Stadium Will Look Like

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially giving fans a glimpse into the future, and if these early renderings are any indication, Chiefs Kingdom is getting one seriously impressive new home.

Today, the Chiefs released the first concept renderings for their new $3 billion enclosed stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2031 in Kansas City, Kansas.

While the new building looks dramatically different from the iconic Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs say they’re making sure the soul of Arrowhead comes along for the ride.

“Today we are excited to show Chiefs Kingdom a first look at our new home. From the beginning, our goal has been to build something that improved the gameday experience for every single fan. This new stadium will do just that,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said.

The new stadium is expected to seat approximately 70,000 fans and will feature a fully enclosed roof made with translucent ETFE panels. The project will also include more than 20,000 parking spaces, with the Chiefs promising to preserve one of the most important traditions in Kansas City football: tailgating.

Because let’s be real, you can’t build a new Chiefs stadium and mess with the tailgating.

The Chiefs Want To Bring The Noise

One of the biggest challenges facing the Chiefs is trying to replicate the legendary atmosphere of Arrowhead Stadium. And that’s no small task.

Arrowhead has long been considered one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, and the Chiefs say the new stadium was specifically designed with crowd noise in mind.

The seating bowl and roof geometry have been studied by audio engineers to maximize the sound inside the building, with the goal of giving Chiefs fans the same kind of home-field advantage they’ve enjoyed for decades.

The seating bowl itself is also designed to feel familiar to longtime fans, while the stadium will feature a new Drum Deck for pregame and in-game ceremonies and a prominent location for the Chiefs Ring of Honor.

The roof will also feature more than 400,000 square feet of translucent panels directly above the field. That should allow plenty of natural light into the stadium while giving fans a clear view during military flyovers.

So, yes, the Chiefs are building a futuristic stadium, but they clearly don’t want it to feel like some generic new NFL venue. They want it to feel like Arrowhead 2.0.

A New Home For Chiefs Kingdom

The stadium is only part of the plan. The Chiefs envision the new venue as a centerpiece of a larger mixed-use development designed to turn game day into an all-day experience.

Fans will be able to visit a new plaza featuring a statue of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt, while the Chiefs Hall of Honor will be more than twice the size of its current space.

The team’s new store will also be significantly larger—approximately four times the size of the current Chiefs Team Store.

And for those who arrive early for games, the parking infrastructure is being designed specifically to enhance the tailgating experience.

In other words, the Chiefs aren’t simply building a new stadium. They’re attempting to create an entire destination around the team.

Who Is Designing The New Chiefs Stadium?

The Chiefs announced that Kansas City-based MANICA will serve as the lead design architect, with Kansas City-based HNTB serving as the architect of record. The selection comes after a six-month design competition involving two finalists.

“We’re proud to name MANICA as our lead design architect and HNTB as the architect of record for this transformational stadium undertaking which will come to life over the next five years,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.

MANICA President and owner David Manica said the goal is to honor Arrowhead’s history while creating something designed for future generations of Chiefs fans.

Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most recognizable venues in American sports, and the Chiefs have spent decades building a unique identity around that building.

Simply replacing it with a shiny new stadium would risk losing some of what makes the franchise special. Based on the early renderings, the Chiefs appear to be trying to avoid that mistake.

The $3 Billion Price Tag

Of course, a project of this magnitude doesn’t come cheap. The new stadium is expected to cost approximately $3 billion and will be funded through a public-private partnership. The public portion will come through STAR bonds and the Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund, while the remainder will be privately funded.

The Chiefs say the overall project—including the new stadium, a new practice facility and team headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, and surrounding mixed-use developments—is expected to generate significant economic activity in the region.

During construction, the project is projected to create approximately 36,500 full-time equivalent job-years and generate $8.2 billion in economic impact for the Kansas City region. Once built, the developments are projected to support approximately 8,500 full-time equivalent jobs and generate $1.5 billion in annual economic impact.

The Chiefs’ new home is still five years away from opening, so there’s plenty of time for these plans to evolve. But one thing is already clear: the Kansas City Chiefs aren’t simply replacing Arrowhead Stadium. They’re trying to build the next great chapter of Chiefs history.

And if they can somehow combine the modern amenities of a $3 billion stadium with the intimidating atmosphere and tailgating culture that made Arrowhead legendary, Chiefs Kingdom could have something very special on its hands.

Now comes the hard part – waiting until 2031.
