Saints Release TE David Thomas And Waive CB Johnny Patrick

The Saints have released veteran tight end David Thomas and waived cornerback Johnny Patrick.

Thomas held a salary cap number of $2.2 million with a base salary of $1.5 million for 2013, which was the final year of his contract. Patrick was only set to make $555,000 in base salary in 2013 with a cap figure around $740,000.

Thomas had been the Saints’ No. 2 tight end behind Jimmy Graham and Jeremy Shockey during Thomas’ four-year stint in New Orleans. Thomas, who turns 30 in July, caught 11 passes for 86 yards and four touchdowns in 2012.

Patrick, a third-round pick in 2011 by the Saints, fell down the depth chart after 2012 training camp where it appeared the primary nickel cornerback job was his to lose. Patrick struggled mightily when he did play in the secondary last season.
