Saints Announce Firing Of DC Spagnuolo And Backfield Coach Flajole

It took recently reinstated Saints coach Sean Payton just two days to make his first major move with his team.

The club announced late Thursday they have fired fired former Rams coach and DC Steve Spagnuolo, and also have sent secondary coach Ken Flajole packing.

“I personally want to thank Steve and Ken for their contributions during what was an unprecedented 2012 season,” said Saints head coach Sean Payton. “Philosophically we are changing our defense to a 3-4 alignment and right now is the best time to accomplish this transition.”

NFL Commish Roger Goodell lifted his one-year suspension of Payton on Tuesday, and he quickly went to work to try and get his team back to form.

In 2012, Spagnuolo’s first year running the Saints’ defense, New Orleans was last in the league in total defense and run defense, and 31st against the pass and in points allowed.

Prior to 2012, Spagnuolo was the Rams’ head coach for three seasons, where Flajole was his defensive coordinator.
