Newly signed Panthers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy spoke today about his decision to come to the Panthers over the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, two teams that also were in hot pursuit of the six-time Pro Bowl tackle.
“The reason I’m here is I’m quoted as saying I want to play for a contender. Every ounce of me feels this is a contender,” McCoy said via Field Yates of ESPN.
The Ravens won the AFC North, while Cleveland defeated the Panthers last season and went 7-8-1, while the Panthers stumbled to a 7-9 mark.
Some think that the Panthers are ready to turn the corner though after quarterback Cam Newton was injured for a good portion of the second half of the year.
“Carolina was a great fit for me. Being around the guys we just meshed & I love the instant chemistry we had. They have a tradition of having a great defense,” McCoy said.
“I love the players & I believe in #1. Ron Rivera is a proven coach & can’t wait to get started.”
McCoy will have plenty of chance to make an impact for the Panthers, and to also back up his words of his new team hopefully being a contender in 2019.
