The San Diego Chargers have turned a weakness into a strength, by choosing Notre Dame ILB Manti Te’o with the 6th pick of the second round, 38th overall.
Te’o was 2nd in the FBS with 7 interceptions (although, most were off average or below-average signal-callers) and anchored the Notre Dame Fighting Irish defense that finished #1 in the FBS with a mere 10.3 points allowed.
The Chargers have been using stopgaps at ILB, and now project to start Te’o and Donald Butler at ILB, Jarret Johnson at OLB, and could still start a new OLB.
Defensive coordinator John Pagano has had the role of linebackers coach in his career as well. They also added a physical CB, Derek Cox.
