If you think that 38 years old is too old to play quarterback in the National Football League – make sure Colts owner Jim Irsay isn’t around to hear you say it.
Irsay is a big fan of Rivers, the new Colts signal caller, and told the official site as such saying that despite being 38 years old, Rivers is a ‘young’ 38.
“I tell ya, I believe Philip is a young 38,” Irsay said to Colts.com.
“We see guys like Drew Brees now, and Tom Brady, playing and doing great things after 40. It won’t even be until 2021 (in) December when Philip gets 40.
“So I think he is a guy with elite leadership, a great release, and what makes it so good is I feel we have the best offensive line in football, and that’s the thing that takes a long time to build.”
The Colts last season were competitive with Jacoby Brissett as their starter, but Brissett was injured and the team just didn’t do enough late in the season to win enough games to make the postseason.
With Rivers now running the show at the QB spot, Irsay and the team feel that they are ready to compete for the AFC South, and also with no more Tom Brady in the AFC as a whole they feel they can take the entire conference.
Let’s see if Rivers can stay young in 2020 and if Irsay’s hope that youth will rule. If so, the Colts have as good as a shot as anyone in the AFC moving forward.
