Mike Smith confirmed quarterback Matt Ryan suffered a sprained left AC shoulder joint against the 49ers in the NFC championship game on Sunday.

“Matt has a sprained left shoulder. If we had the outcome that we wanted last night, he would have participated in the game in New Orleans. He will not be playing in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii this week.

Smith would not confirm that Ryan’s shoulder had to be popped back into the joint after the game.

“I can’t comment on that,” Smith said. “I just know that it was a sprained AC joint, which is the shoulder. No surgical procedure. He’ll be rehabbing him here over the next couple of weeks. Then he’ll get on to his offseason.”

The shoulder was not separated or dislocated.

“He will be ready to go (by the start of the offseason program in April,” Smith said. “They feel like it’s a three to four week recovery. But again, he would have played in two weeks.”
