Bears Trade for Adams Addresses Big Offseason Priority

So the wheelin’-and-dealin’ Jerry Angelo strikes again. On Friday, the Bears acquired Tampa defensive end Gaines Adams for a 2010 2nd round pick. While I was initially surprised we parted with our first pick in next year’s draft (the 1st rounder is headed to Denver), the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.

I mentioned in an earlier post that the Bears would probably look at DE early in the draft. The trade for Gaines addresses a glaring need considering two of our top 3 DEs are in the last year of their contracts. Angelo has been hit and miss with his early round picks, so the trade for a known NFL commodity (13.5 sacks in 37 career games, or a half sack more than Alex Brown over the same period) makes more sense than investing in an unproven, 2nd round talent who pockets significant coinage based soley on ‘potential’ (paging Dan Bazuin…Mr. Bazuin…Has anyone seen Dan Bazuin?).

Adams seems like he’s coachable. So if he can’t blossom under the tutelage of Hot Rod Marinelli, he won’t produce anywhere. And the fact the Bears got a bargain – around $1 million for the next 3 years – only sweetens the deal.

So strike priority #1 off the 2010 offseason to-do list. And take advantage of the 10 additional hours of your life you’ll gain next April not waiting around for the Bears to pick in the first two rounds of the draft. Unless ‘Dealer Jerry’ strikes again and does something he’s only done once in his tenure with the Bears – trade up.
