There’s rumblings that there is a war about to brew in the Nation’s capital between Redskins running back Clinton Portis and head coach Jim Zorn. PFT.com reports that sources have told the site that Portis is showing “shows little or no respect to coach Jim Zorn, and that the situation bubbled over at least once during the team’s OTA sessions, with Portis telling the coach off in front of other players.”

The running back has always run to a beat of his own drum, but usually he’s been somewhat of a loner, and not gotten too involved with causing issues with his team. If what PFT is reporting is true, then Portis’ problem causing very well may translate down to the rest of the team. A team that is expected to be better in 2009 and challenge for a playoff spot in the NFC.

The site says that part of the reason for Portis’ ego is the fact that owner Dan Synder has gone to him with team issues, and even considers Portis a “friend,” which is dangerous since it puts Portis above others on the team. Last season the back was once again productive, rushing for 1487 yards with 9 touchdowns.

Problem is if Portis starts to divide the locker room and there’s a lot of issues with Zorn, then the 09 season for the Redskins could quickly become a powder keg ready to explode.
