There’s been a lot of chatter about how long it’s going to take the Bengals, who are known for first-round holdouts, to get O-lineman Andre Smith in the house for training camp. The player picked in front of Smith, Jets QB Mark Sanchez, has a deal, so you would think it would be easy for the Bengals to have something to go by – right?
But as usual, the Bengals never do anything easy, and while Smith is saying all the right things about being on time, who knows how long it’ll be for the Bengals to get a deal done with Andre. Today on NFL.com, Smith had some comments about it being important to getting in camp and setting an example for the line.
“That’s No. 1,” said Smith, who’s represented by agent Alvin Keels. “I want to be there on time because I want to give myself the opportunity to come in and play in the first game.”
The deal in the five spot for Sanchez saw him get maximum value of $60 million, including $28 million in guaranteed money. You can bet that Smith wont’ come close to that, but the Bengals are going to have to be fair if they want to see him in camp on time.
Last years 6th overall pick was Jets outside linebacker Vernon Gholston, and he got a five-year, $40 million contract that included $21 million in guaranteed money. You can bet that Keels is going to use that as a scale and make it slightly larger to get a deal done for his client.
For now, it still seems like based on past history, a holdout in one way shape or form is coming.

Michael Vick, who seems to have a new lead on what NFL team wants him every other day, has a new job in the real world. ESPN reports that Vick will now be working with the Boys and Girls Club:
Suspended NFL star Michael Vick is leaving a job with a Virginia construction company to work with youngsters at Boys & Girls Clubs. Steven Kast, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, says Vick will be working with children on health and fitness activities at several clubs in the Hampton Roads area. Vick was a regular at the Boys & Girls Club in Newport News as a youngster.
“We were disappointed by some of his recent actions and decisions but believe he has learned from these experiences and is now conscious of his obligations and responsibilities as a prominent sports figure that impacts and influences our kids,” Kast said in a written statement. Vick needed a job to meet the conditions of his probation and had been working as a $10-an-hour laborer.

How’s Percy “The Sick One” Harvin for an NFL nickname? That’s right, Pro Football Talk is reporting that Percy Harvin is missing out on the rookie experience once again.
According to the article, Harvin was sent home from the rookie symposium due to flu-like symptoms.
A big part of the symposium is to tutor the young players on the importance that the NFL places on character and being a role model.
One could argue that Harvin is the one player in this draft class that will be most scrutinized as far as character goes, as the Vikings are thought to have taken a big risk by drafting him in the first round.
Harvin also missed out on the first round of OTAs earlier this year when he was hospitalized for an illness.

A simple act of kindness, may just change one mans life ! Some of you reading this may know me from my past attempts to write for our very own NFL Gridiron Gab, what you may not know is that I moonlight as a football writer. My real job is as a manager for my local Wal Mart. As part of my job I often find myself involved in the personal real life affairs of my co-workers.
One of those situations recently put me into the real life struggle with alcoholism. One of my associates Derek Morris is involved in the everyday battle with the bottle. Derek came to me in private and expressed an emotional outpouring as he relayed to me he had relapsed. This man thought he had gotten one up on the addiction, well one drink led to two drinks and so on and so forth.
I listened to every word wishing some how some way I could take control and fix his problem. When I got and idea, something complety impossable but worth a shoot. I could put this man in a situation where failure would not be an option.
This co-worker is a life long Steelers fan, and he lives and breaths black and yellow.
I remember reading an article somewhere that talked about Steelers great and Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw and his struggles with alcoholism.( I had no idea if these struggles where real.As I do not personally know Terry.) But never the less I remember the article. In my time with this website I have had the opportunity to make connections and I felt it was time to put them to work.
I sent letters to Dan Rooney who, if you are reading this you are already aware is a Steelers institution by himself. I also made contact with Terry Bradshaw. I told both of them of the situation Derek was in and how he is fighting everyday for freedom from this addiction. I ask for nothing but a simple message that I could relay to this man as motivation to continue fighting.
On Saturday June 27th, I came home from work to find an unusual letter in my mailbox, postmarked from a town in Louisiana. I took that letter and made the trip back to my place of work, a place I had just left 15-30 minutes before. I pulled into the parking lot not knowing what to expect, I had shared this mans personal life without his knowledge or permission.
When I walked in and saw Derek I motioned him over to me, so we could talk in private. I told him of what I had done and that I had just received a response. As I was telling him the story of the events that led to that very conversation you could see that he was shaking. He had goose bumps on his arms as I handed him the envelope. He gathered himself and took a quick moment to understand before he opened the letter. The message was clear, Terry Bradshaw understood.
Terry Bradshaw wanted this man to beat this problem. So from this day forward this man is no longer fighting alone, he has help. Mr. Bradshaw enclosed an autographed card, that will act as an everyday reminder. Every time he gets the urge to drink he has to remember that Terry Bradshaw is rooting for him, just like he used to root for Terry.
I would like to use this article to publicly say Thank You………….. to Terry Bradshaw and the rest of the Steelers organization. Everyone involved in there organization is first class. You took the time to make an impact in someones life. An impact more than you or I could have every imagined.
It’s no wonder that the Pittsburgh Steelers have the most pasonate fans in the land. They are more than just fans, They are Family.

The AFC West clearly had a down year last year with San Diego escaping with the division crown at 8-8. The Chargers edged out the Broncos on the last game of the season after starting 5-8, since that point those two teams have went in opposite directions the Chargers advanced to the AFC divisional round only to lose out to the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers.
The Broncos meanwhile promptly fired their longtime coach Mike Shanahan after their late season collapse and traded their up and coming quarter back Jay Cutler. On paper it would seem the Broncos will be in for a very long year and have probably taken two or three steps backwards in their development, the Chargers meanwhile may have gotten even stronger with the resigning of franchise player Darren Sproles and stud pass rusher Shawn Merriman will be returning from a injury that caused him to miss a majority of last season.
With the Chargers the clear class of the division the Chiefs, Broncos and Raiders will more than likely be battling it out for second place in the division.
San Diego Chargers: Last season was almost enough to get head coach Norv Turner fired and if he would have lost last season’s finale against the Broncos he very well may have been , but the team went on a amazing late season run that saved his job. The Chargers will have their easiest route to a divisional title in many years the main concern will be getting running back Ladainian Tomlinson back on track after he suffered his worst season since his first year in the league.
The return of all pro pass rusher Shawn Merriman should help as well with the Chargers unable to generate a pass rush much of last season their defense should be back on track. The Chargers are far and away the most experienced and talented team in the division anything less than winning the division would be a wasted year and could cost Norv Turner his job.
Odds on winning the division: 1.5-1
Denver Broncos: Talk about a team in disarray, last year in November the Broncos had a three game lead with three games left in the season. The Chargers looked old and the Broncos looked like the team that would take control of the division for the next five years, after a three game slide at the end the Broncos lost their long time coach then traded star quarterback Jay Cutler. Now Brandon Marshall the up and coming receiver wants out of town as well, it seems like all the progress the Broncos have made over the past three seasons has been completely lost.
First year head coach Josh McDaniels who comes from the Patriots organization has quite a tough road laid out for him to get this team back to being perennial division powers. The only positive for the Broncos this off season has been a solid draft class highlighted by Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno and defensive end Robert Ayers.
Odds on winning the division: 10-1
Kansas City Chiefs: This has been a off season of change for the Chiefs, Carl Peterson the long time general manager and occasional face of the franchise is gone so is coach Herm Edwards and perhaps the greatest Chief of all time Tony Gonzalez. Not all is lost though Scott Pioli has taken over the general manager duties and he brought tough talking Todd Haley to coach the inexperienced team.
Most of the players from the Herm Edwards youth movement are still here while coach Haley and Pioli try to figure out which ones will fit the system. Meanwhile most of the veterans from that era have been replaced by Zach Thomas, Mike Goff, Mike Vrabel and Mike Brown but this season will come down how much success first year Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel can have behind a partially improved offensive line and how quick the defense will respond to the switch to the 3-4 defense. The Chiefs may have the pieces in place to be on the rise but they are at least another season away from competing.
Odds on winning the division: 11-1
Oakland Raiders: Year after year it is the same story in Oakland a new coach who owner Al Davis will eventually sabotage and ruin any progress the team is making. If Davis would have left Lane Kiffin in place as coach this could have been the season the Raiders took a real jump with young players like JaMarcus Russell, Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and rookie receiver Darius Howard-Bey.
The Raiders are set up for the long term better than any team in the division but may take longer than normal to reach their potential due to a revolving door of coordinators and coaches. The most important thing for the Raiders to establish this season is consistency. The Raiders have the core of talented players to be successful but they new consistency in the playbook, the roster and most importantly the coaching. If the Raiders keep Tom Cable as their coach for the next three years the raiders could really blossom as a AFC power in the next two to four years.
Odds on winning the division: 20-1

The what seems to be never ending drama surrounding Broncos WR Brandon Marshall took another turn on Tuesday, as 7NEWS in Denver released a story saying that Marshall said he “hated Denver” during a traffic stop for a DUI back in 2007.
“I hate Denver. I hope I get traded. I hate this f******* city,” an officer wrote in the police report, according to the station. The report just became public as investigators of the station asked for it. The story reads that Marshall was peeved at police for pulling him over and not finding the killer of fellow Bronco Darrent Williams.
“Why aren’t you guys out looking for Williams’ killer?” the report says.
Marshall recently asked the Broncos to trade him, and the team went back and forth with the notion of moving him, but decided that they wanted him on the roster in 2009.
Now that this is out, it will be interesting to see if Marshall does any damage control, or if things just continue to get worse with the Broncos and now the fans of Denver who read that he does not appreciate the city.

Believe it or not I think this years division race is more wide open then ever with so many question marks and unknowns. The Steelers are by far the favorites on paper going into this season but with age starting to become a factor for the Steelers, who know what is in store for the Black and Gold?
The Ravens are also a team on paper should compete for the division championship but with an aging defense and a quarterback who hopefully enter his sophomore slump and struggle in the 09 season.
The Bengals and Browns are in the bottom of division in most experts predictions and I am going to flip it around.
Bengals 10-6
Carson Palmer and Ocho Cinco return to there old form in becoming of the most dangerous duo’s in the NFL. Remember just a few years ago whey they were the second most explosive offense in the NFL behind the Colts? The Bengals added much needed on the Defensive side of the Ball and Marvin Lewis job is on the line this season.
Cedric Benson showed he can be a productive back the second part of last season. The addition of Coles helps the ease the pain losing T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the offseason.
Key Games
Week 3 at Home against the Steelers
The Bengals must win this game if they are going to win the Divison like I am predicting..
Week 12 at Home against the Browns
Last division game of the year for the Bengals. Might be a surprise game of the year. With the NFL Flex schedule wouldn’t it be something Browns Vs Bengals “Battle of Ohio” for the division lead in the AFC North..
Cleveland Browns 9-7
Brady Quinn wins the job out of training camp and the Browns come out of the gate strong 2-0. Jamal Lewis has another 1,000 yard season and the loss of Kellen Winslow benefits the Browns offense keeping the defense fresh and a lot more effective under Rob Ryan.
The added depth in the offensive line is the strength of the team and keeps them in the division and playoff race all season long.
Key Games
Week 3 at Baltimore
I think the Browns can win the first two games of the season, if that happens they will be 2-0 going into there first division game and it being on the road against the Baltimore Ravens. The Browns haven’t been to successful on the road in recent memory but could be the shock of the NFL starting 3-0.
Week 6 at Pittsburgh
The Browns haven’t been able to beat the Steelers since 2003, and the fans are past restless about that. The Steelers had Romeo Crennels number but Eric Mangini has beaten the Steelers in the past and if he could do that in Pittsburgh Week 6, the confidence can take this team to places we haven’t seen since the 80’s.
Pittsburgh Steelers 9-7
The Steelers are going to start out of the gate slow. I think they will beat the Titans in Week 1 but struggle in the months of September and October and with their experience will help them get back on track in November and December and right the ship.
I also predict a major Injury to this team. QB Ben Roethlisburger is a very tough quarterback, but took a beating last year and am interested to see how is body recovers. Hines Ward is aging by the second and could see him going down this season due to a major injury.
Key Games Week 4 San Diego
Pittsburgh has been so successful on Prime Time at Home. Could LT and Shawn Merriman come into Pittsburgh and get revenge for their playoff defeat last season? The City of Pittsburgh would be shocked if San Diego comes in and shows weakness in the 09 Steelers and expose there defense.
Week 12 at Baltimore
The Ravens requested not to play the Steelers on primetime in Pittsburgh in the 09 season. I could see the Steelers going into Baltimore and shalack them again on primetime but this time in Baltimore. Pittsburgh is going to use that as motivation in this rivalry. This is going to be the game that puts the Ravens away in division and helps the Steelers right the ship in 09.
Baltimore Ravens 7-9
The Ravens are going to feel the effects of losing Rex Ryan. The defense is getting old and lost a key part in LB Bart Scott. Joe Flacco is going to find out being an NFL quarterback isn’t as easy as it was in the 08 season. The Ravens faithful are going to be calling for Troy Smith who is going to be one of the few bright spots in the 09 season for the Ravens.
Key Games
Week 5 vs Bengals
The Ravens second divisional game at home is the Bengals. They can’t possibly have a shot at the division if losing to the Browns and Bengals at home in there first two divisional games. The Ravens need to find a way to stop Palmer and company if they want a shot in this game.
Week 16 at Steelers
After requesting to not playing at night in Pittsburgh the Ravens return to Heinz field for the first time since the AFC Championship game with there season over by now. Can show good signs for the 2010 campaign with a win in Pittsburgh and confidence they can win in that ugly Stadium.
2009 AFC North First Team:
Quarterback
Carson Palmer
Running Back
Rashard Mendenhall
Wide Receivers
Chad Ocho Cinco and Braylon Edwards
Tight End
Todd Heap
Defensive Player
Shaun Rogers
Special Teams
Josh Cribbs

Jerry Jones announced this week that there wouldn’t be any RoH inductees again this year. I think that is a big mistake, Mr. Jones, since the new stadium is opening this year and there are several quality players who should be considered for it.
Let’s go over a quick history of the RoH before I give my argument as to who and why other player(s) should be inducted, if not this year, but soon. First created in 1975, it is a ring inside of then-Texas Stadium to honor former players, coaches and club personnel who have made outstanding contributions to the Cowboys organization. Bob Lilly was the first person honored with the retiring of his jersey, No. 74, and having his name and number plastered under the press box. He has also remained the presenter to every inductee since this historic day in November of ‘75.
There are currently 17 members of this elite ring with the last inductions being held at Texas Stadium in 2005 when the “Triplets” of Aikman, Irvin and Smith were deservingly given the honor. So that has almost been five years now since a new honoree has been named. There have been gaps in the process before with only nine players being named over the first three decades of the team’s existence! But I feel that the time has come for a new ceremony and name(s) to be placed in the RoH.
The first person I believe should be seriously considered for it is……..drum roll…….Charlie Waters. Waters played safety for the Cowboys from ‘70-’78 and again in the ‘80-’81 seasons. He is currently third all-time in interceptions, and leads the organization in post-season picks with nine. His playing partner, Cliff Harris, is a RoH member and the two of them were possibly the best Safety tandem to have ever played the game. Waters was a hard-hitter but great in coverage also. He was named to three consecutive Pro Bowls from ‘76-’78 and only a knee injury kept him out of the ‘79 Pro Bowl. He was also named first-team All-Pro twice and did play-by-play with Brad Sham in the booth for a while.
Waters has done some coaching since then having served as defensive coordinator in Denver and worked with now-HC Wade Phillips. By all accounts, it seems to me he is just as deserving as his playing partner Harris. From my lips to Jerry Jones’ ear you might say!
My next nominee was a then little-known player who signed a free-agent contract with the Cowboys in 1990 and now is in their top 10 of all-time receivers. He made five straight Pro Bowls and also served as holder on field goals and XP’s. He was a former QB from the University of Wyoming and a naturally-gifted all-around athlete and cowboy. Yes, TE Jay Novacek is a RoH shoe-in in my book. With 339 career receptions and over 3,500 yards, only Jason Witten has recently surpassed him in the record books among Cowboys’ tight ends. A serious back injury he sustained in the ‘95 Super Bowl victory over the hated Steelers forced him to retire fairly early in his career or there’s no telling what his stats would have been. He was Aikman’s go-to receiver, especially on third downs, and made many memorable catches over his six-year career in Dallas.
So as the Cowboys start a new era in their new home, I find it only appropo that there should be some fresh blood added to this unique institution called the “Ring of Honor” at Cowboys Stadium.

Former Vikings and Cardinals head coach Dennis Green took to the airwaves talking to NFL Radio, and said some interesting things about how he feels that Bill Parcells and the Dolphins will make a serious run at former Falcons QB Michael Vick:
“I have a hard time believing that Michael Vick is not going to wind up with Bill Parcells,” Green said, “simply because he has that creativeness that says that no matter what it takes, he’s going to find a way to get Michael Vick. Now, whether it means convincing the Commissioner or whatever it takes, Michael Vick is probably going to wind up at Miami because of the fact that Bill Parcells is Bill Parcells.”
The Dolphins have said little to nothing about Vick, who is a free agent after the Falcons released him a few weeks back. Miami already runs a “wildcat” offense with Ronnie Brown as the key, so who knows – maybe adding Vick wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

The NFC West is shaping up to be wide-open this year. How will it end up? Let’s take a look for the late June versions of the teams.
1. Arizona Cardinals – overlooked in their magically Super Bowl run and near Super Bowl win was the fact that the Cardinals went 9-7 and looked terrible in a lot of their losses. They won’t sneak up on anyone this year. Prediction: 9-7
2. Seattle Seahawks – Injury-prone last year, the team gets younger on defense, but stays the same on offense. Matt Hassleback needs to stay on the field for them to have a winning season. He won’t stay on the field for the whole year, but do enough. Prediction 8-8
3. St. Louis Rams - The Rams are on the way back, but not all the way back yet. Prediction 8-8.
4. San Francisco 49ers - No quarterback is a problem for the 9ers. They won’t be able to outplay or surprise anyone. But, they will not embarass themselves for ultra-motivator Mike Singletary. Prediction 7-9.
Parody all around in the NFC West. It would go a lot of ways. It should be a great season.
