Patriots Looking to Swing a Deal for Oakland LB Burgess

The Patriots lost out on trying to land linebacker Jason Taylor, who went back to Miami, but evidently that has not stopped them from continuing to look for playmakers on defense.

The latest rumor about a possible deal for the club comes from the Boston Herald, who reports that the team might make a deal for Raiders LB Derrick Burgess. Here’s the report:

According to multiple reports, the Patriots are considering a trade that would land Raiders linebacker Derrick Burgess in exchange for a second- or third-round draft pick. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound Burgess, who turns 31 on Aug. 12, is a two-time Pro Bowler who had 16 sacks for the Raiders in 2005 but has been slowed by injuries in recent years.

Last season, he had 3 sacks and 24 tackles in 10 games. Burgess, who is in the final year of his contract, has thus far stayed away from voluntary workouts in Oakland. He is said to be unhappy with not being able to reach a new deal.

Burgess would be another solid vet who could come right in for Bill Belichick and the club and have a big impact as a player that, if healthy, can play and play at a high level for the Pats.
