The 49′ers are hoping that they will have a much more efficient offense in 2009, and one position that has to be settled early for coach Mike Singletary and the club is that of quarterback. The weekend mini-camp showed a little glimpse of what is going to come down in July at training camp, as Shaun Hill and Alex Smith look to trade punches and throws like two heavyweight fighters.

Hill looked the better of the two this first weekend, as Saturday he looked good throwing both long and short, and seems to have a solid grasp already of what is expected of him as the quarterback of this club. Hill also made quicker reads than Smith, and seems to lead his recievers better.

Smith is trying to come back and prove to everyone he’s not the bust that he’s already been labeled as, being the first pick a couple years ago. He also had some shining moments in the first mini-camp, and he’s not to be taken lightly. Smith knows that this is it – it’s time to put up or shut up, and likely be on the street after this season as the club probably would not bring him back again.

For now, give Hill the early lead. He played in 9 games last season, threw 13 TD’s and 8 picks, and had a QB rating of 87.5, tops on the team. But make no mistake, it’ll be a competition, and one that should be fun to watch as the summer heats up in San Fran.
