The Ravens have themselves another QB on their team, as the club has come to terms with former Miami Dolphin thrower John Beck. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Beck has agreed in principle on a one-year contract. The 27-year-old will come in and compete against Troy Smith for the backup quarterback job.
He was a second round draft pick by Miami back in 2007, but found himself on the outside looking in this past Wednesday when the team released him. It came five days after the Fins drafted WV’s Pat White in the 2nd round of the draft.
Beck played under current Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron in Miami, as he was the head coach there at that time. The Sun reports that possibly up to six NFL teams were interested in Beck. He likely could get a physical on Monday and sign with the Ravens before the start of their first minicamp on Friday.
As a rookie, Beck played in five games (including four starts), completing 60 of 107 passes for 559 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and three interceptions, recording a quarterback rating of 62.0. Now the Ravens have Joe Flacco as the starter, Tood Bouman, Troy Smith, Beck and added Buffalo’s Drew Willy as an undrafted rookie.
