The Pittsburgh Steelers ensured that their leading wide receiver finishes his career in the Steel City as the team on Sunday signed Hines Ward to a five-year extension, which runs through the 2013 season.

Ward’s contract entension is expected to be worth around $22 million and allows the team to spread out his signing bonus to take a load off the salary cap; Ward will make less this season than the $5.8 million he would have made in the final season of the $27.5 million deal he signed back in 2005. However, much of that money will be made up in the form of a signing bonus.

Last season, Ward had 81 catches for 1,043 yards and 7 touchdowns; a 1998 draft pick, he owns Steelers records with 800 career catches and is 220 yards shy of the 10,000-yard mark for his career.
