The player that the Lions want with the first pick in Saturday’s Draft is out – it’s QB Matthew Stafford. Reports from the Detroit Free Press state that the Lions have been talking for two days with Stafford trying to get a deal done, but nothing has been set as of yet.

The paper says that the sides have not reached a deal, and talks are expected to continue. The Georgia QB told ESPN that he was well aware of the talks with the Lions, but also knew they were chatting with another player, possibly LB Aaron Curry. The LB told Sirius today he’d be happy to be the number one taking less money than Jake Long did a season ago.

The Free Press stated that Stafford could receive a six-year deal in the $70 million range, with perhaps $40 million guaranteed. General manager Martin Mayhew said Tuesday the Lions were “moving forward on getting something done” and there was a “very good” chance they would sign the No. 1 pick before the draft.
