Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis confirmed that in fact, he did discuss with his family the possibility of resigning after the 2008 season. In last Sunday’s Chicago Tribune, it was reported that Weis had given consideration to leaving the college ranks in favor of a return to the NFL as a coordinator.
“Did I expect that I was leaving? No. But did I have a conversation with my family about whether or not there’s a possibility? Well, yeah. But you think about it. If you’re a husband and you’re a dad, if you don’t do that then I think you’re being negligent in your responsibilities. That’s about as far as it goes. Did I think I was going to quit and walk out the door? That’s not what I came here for.”
Weis will be completing the last year of a six-year contract with Notre Dame and free to pursue NFL offers at season’s end. Prior to his tenor with the Fighting Irish, Weis served as offensive coordinator for New England Patriots from 2000 thru 2004.
The question must be asked, could the Chiefs GM Scott Pioli be interested in a reunion with Weis? The speculation wouldn’t be complete without contemplating the additional twist of reuniting OC Charlie Weis with Cleveland Browns QB Brady Quinn.
