The Cardinals announced today that they have re-signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Clark Haggans to a three-year deal. The specific terms, however, have not been disclosed at this point.
Haggans, a 32 year-old veteran, signed with the Cardinals last year after spending the first eight years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 6’4”, 243 pound linebacker played in 11 games in 2008, accumulating 27 tackles, one sack, and one fumble recovery. Haggans’ season, however, was cut short when he was placed on injured reserve on December 19 due to an injury to his left foot.
Re-signing Haggans presumably alters the Cardinals’ draft needs this year. An outside linebacker was reportedly on the Cards’ list, but resigning Haggans may be the Cardinals’ answer to that need. While Haggans impact on the field was not all that profound last year, it is reported that he is a positive influence in the locker room, as well as a solid back up for Chike Okeafor.
The Cardinals are apparently taking additional measures to reinforce the defense. Darren Urban, a writer for the Cardinals’ official website, reports that the Cards also intend to re-sign veteran defensive end Bertrand Berry, who the team reportedly considers a top priority.
