Mendenhall

The Steelers have their two newest weapons under contract as they look to revamp and have a more explosive offense in 2008.  Today the team signed their first and second round picks, RB Rashard Mendenhall, and WR Limas Sweed.  The word is that Mendenhall gets a deal that will pay him $7.125 mil in guaranteed money on a five-year deal. The amount of the package is $12.555.

Sweed, just the type of WR that QB Ben Roethlisberger wanted, gets a four-year deal.  The amount of that deal is not yet known.  Back to Mendenhall, word is the team is looking for him return kicks and spell Willie Parker, whose 2007 season was cut short by a broken leg.  He’s the first running back drafted in the first round by the Steelers since Georgia’s Tim Worley in 1989.

Last season in six games, Sweed pulled in 19 catches for 306 yards and 3 scores.  He had 124 catches in four years at Texas for 1,915 yards and 20 scores.  He will help the Steelers spread the field with his large 6-3 frame, and his leaping ability will make him a go to target in the red zone for Big Ben and the team.
