Can’t say this one was a shock, as yours truly called it from the moment he called it quits – Brett Favre wants to come back to the Packers. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that Farve, with his “family tugging on him to play, has has itch to come out of retirement.” Mortensen cites sources close to Favre and the team that say he wants to report to camp later this month.
Not a shock here.
Back on March 6th during Favre’s “retirement” presser, it was painfully obvious that he wanted to play again. That day I wrote the following: “Sorry Brett, you can fool some, but after listening to a press conference that lasted over 70 minutes, you can’t deny the obvious – this gunslinger is going to play again. Soon. Sure, he may have sounded genuine in trying to tell the media at his “retirement” press conference today that he was ready to go, and that he was going out on top, but come on, do you really believe it? Brett Favre sounded more today that he was trying to tell himself that it was time as much as he was telling the media.”
Since then, there has been speculation abound that Favre would be back, and despite the Pack telling everyone that he was gone and now the team belonged to Aaron Rodgers, you just knew that Brett wouldn’t go out that way. He couldn’t, could he. Mortensen says in the article that Favre has talked to Mike McCarthy about coming back, but, that the Pack would be reluctant to open the door for him to come back.
So if Brett does want to come back, what happens? Do the Pack eventually tell Aaron Rodgers to sit (again), or if Brett does want to play, will he have to do it in another uniform? Favre has two years remaining on his contract at an average of about $12.5 million per season, but it’s a small price the Pack would have to pay to get their franchise QB back on the field for one more run at a ring.
