Senator, Goodell To Discuss Bills’ Future

With the future of the Buffalo Bills at stake, a meeting of the minds is usually in order to ensure that the team doesn’t leave New York State; according to the Associated Press, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and state Senator Charles Schumer of New York will meet with Bills owner Ralph Wilson to discuss ways to keep the franchise in Buffalo.

Not long ago, with NFL approval, Wilson scheduled some Bills games - both preseason and regular season - at the 50,000 capacity Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada; the decision has fuled some speculation about the Bills, at some point in time, relocating there. Last week, when asked about the prospects of the Bills moving to Toronto, Wilson replied, “Hey, I can’t speculate what’s going to happen in the future. But don’t worry. Don’t worry right now.” Wilson has also previously stated that his family is not interested in running the team after him.

New York state representative Brian Higgins, from Buffalo, has already met with Goodell; in a letter to Goodell, Higgins requested that the league consider amending its constitution to allow full community ownership - like the Green Bay Packers - or at the very least a minority stake. The Bills’ lease with Erie County runs out in 2012.
