NFL OK’s Bills Games In Canada

In what has been discussed for some time is about to become a reality; according to SportsTicker, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has announced that the league will play a regular season game in Toronto, Canada for the next five seasons. Although no set date is in place for next season’s game, Goodell did reveal that the Buffalo Bills will annually play in the game.

Goodell also mentioned that the Bills will play 3 preseason games in Toronto over the same 5-year period. The Bills playing regular season games in Toronto has for all intents and purposes become a necessity, because as a small-market club, they’re desperate for corporate sponsorship and increased revenues. The Bills already enjoy a substantial fan base in Canada, as an estimated 10,000 people cross the border to watch Bills games at Ralph Wilson Stadium. There’s also opportunities for cross-promotion as regular season games in Toronto may also help motivate corporate support from Canadian businesses for some of the higher-priced seats at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

In the announcement made by Goodell, he also stated that he is mindful of their current relationship with the Canadian Football League and said that he already has the blessing of the CFL commissioner Mark Cohon. Goodell also made it clear that the NFL has no designs into expanding into Canada in the near future.
