Alexander’s Return Big, Seahawks Cruise Past Ravens 27-6

It can be said that Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander returned to the team at the most opportune time – especially with the playoffs just around the corner. He and quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had decent outings in leading the Seahawks to an easy win over the lifeless Baltimore Ravens 27-6 Sunday at Seattle.

Neither team held a big advantage, yardage-wise (Seattle had 336 to Baltimore’s 293) or time of possession (Seattle – 32:36 to Baltimore’s 27:24). But Seattle held the advantage by being efficient – in other words, getting first downs when needed the most. no actual scoring took place until the second quarter, when Hasselbeck connected with Nate Burleson on a 21-yard touchdown pass; Burleson put on a move on Ravens reserve cornerback Willie Gaston – who is replacing Samari Rolle as he is on the IR – making the score 7-0 Seattle.

The Seahawks participated in the scoring as well; Seattle linebacker recovered a Mike Anderson fumble then returned it 20 yards for a score, which gave Seattle a 14-0 lead. Late in the first half, Hasselbeck connected with Alexander on a 14-yard TD pass, making the score 21-0. Seattle would score twice in the third period on a pair of field goals by kicker Josh Brown, widening Seattle’s advantage to 27-0. Baltimore’s lone score came late fourth quarter when QB Troy Smith, who replaced Kyle Boller who is out with a concussion, threw a 79-yard TD pass to Derrick Mason.

Hasselbeck had an efficient day, going 18-of-27 for 199 with 2 TD’s and 2 INT’s; Alexander had his best day rushing since Week 4 with 73 yards on 13 carries with a receiving TD, while RB Maurice Morris added 40 yards on the ground. Wide receiver Bobby Engram led all Seattle receivers with 5 receptions for 69 yards, while Burleson added 52 yards and a score. Baltimore’s Smith had a below-average effort, going 16-of-33 for 199 yards and a TD. Anderson, who replaced RB Willis McGahee due to broken ribs in the first quarter, led all Ravens rushers with 44 yards. Mason led all Ravens’ receivers with 5 catches for 98 yards and a TD.

Seattle (10-5), playoff position secure, travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons next Sunday; Baltimore (4-11), losers of 9 straight, return home for their home finale as they host the Pttsburgh Steelers – also next Sunday.
