Tatupu’s 3 INT’s prove big as Seahawks declaw Eagles 28-24

No matter what position you play on defense, if you intercept three passes in one game, you’ve played a heck of a game. But it isn’t every day that a linebacker is the responsible party. Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu had that distinction Sunday afternoon; he intercepted 3 passes thrown by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback A.J. Feeley – 2 of them in the first quarter – which proved to be key as the Seahawks defeated the Eagles 28-24 at Philadelphia.

Feeley started the game by throwing an interception to the aforementioned Tatupu, who would run it back 33 yards to the Eagles 18-yard line. Seattle would draw first blood at 7-0 on a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Shaun Alexander. Philadelphia running back Correll Buckhalter would rush up the middle for a 30-yard TD run, knotting the score at 7. Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck would throw a 12-yard TD pass to wide receiver Bobby Engram, increasing the Seahawks lead to 14-7 – all of this scoring took place in the first quarter.

After Eagles kicker David Akers kicked a 31-yard field goal, making the margin 14-10 Seattle which capped all of the 1st quarter scoring. Seattle in the second quarter would extend their lead to 21-10 on a 43-yard, Hasselbeck-to-Nate Burleson TD pass. Feeley would respond with a 24-yard TD pass to WR Kevin Curtis, narrowing the score to 21-17. The 3rd quarter scoring consisted of matching TD runs, the first a 29-yard run by Eagles RB Brian Westbrook, making the score, giving Philadelphia a brief 24-21 lead. Seattle would come back with a 45-yard touchdown run by RB Maurice Morris, giving the Seahawks a 28-24 lead.

With less than 2 minutes left in the game, the Eagles’ Westbrook had a 64-yard punt return, taking the ball to the Seattle 14. But on 3rd down, Feeley would throw an interception – his 4th of the game – sealing the win for Seattle. Seattle’s Hasselbeck had an OK outing, going 19-of-34 for 187 yards with 2 TD’s and an INT. Alexander and Morris had almost identical rushing stats; Alexander rushed for 65 and a TD, while Morris ran for 64 and a score. Seattle’s receiving corps was led by Burleson with 4 receptions for 71 yards and a TD, while Engram chipped in with 5 catches for 60 yards and a score.

The Eagles’ Feeley, as you could imagine, stunk up the joint. He went 19-of-42 for 220 yards and a TD, but also threw 4 INT’s. RB Brian Westbrook had a decent outing, rushing for 93 yards and a TD, while catching 7 balls for 46 yards. Buckhalter added 37 rushing yards and a score. Curtis led all Eagles receivers with 6 catches for 111 yards and a score. Seattle (8-4) return home to Quest Field as they will host the Arizona Cardinals in a key divisional matchup next Sunday afternoon, while Philadelphia (5-7) look to cling to their already paper-thin wild-card aspirations as they host the New York Giants, also next Sunday.
