Don’t Rush To Judgment After A Rivalry Game

T.O. makes another play

It wasn’t pretty, not in the slightest, and it was closer than any Cowboys fans would have wanted. The Cowboys defense didn’t have an answer for Jason Campbell’s offense, and once again the Cowboys struggled coming out of the gate. Despite both of these facts, the Dallas Cowboys were able to pull off a win against the Washington Redskins to push their record up to 9 and 1.

Now I know, as well as anyone, that we as fans expect nothing shy of perfection in each game, but that seldom happens. In fact the true measuring stick of a good team is being able to win a game despite not coming out with your ‘A’ Game. The other point I’d like to make about these past two games, other than the fact that the Cowboys won both, is that they were division rivalry games. Even more, this last game was against the Washington Redskins.

When you play a historic rival like the Washington Redskins you have to throw records out the window. Records don’t matter. Just look through the years and you’ll see that. When the Redskins went to the Super Bowl, their only loss in ‘non-garbage’ time came against the Cowboys. Likewise all those years the Cowboys were going to the Super Bowl, they struggled and even lost to the Washington Redskins. During those years, either it was the Cowboys or it was the Redskins but one of those teams were really bad, yet it didn’t matter come game time just how much better one team was to the other. This time, lets face it, the Redskins are actually a good team, and the Cowboys still came out with a win.

Anyone want to remember last year? Do you realize that the Cowboys only beat one team last year with a winning record, being the Indianapolis Colts? So far it’s possible that the Cowboys will have beaten four teams with a winning record: The Giants 7-3, The Eagles are 5-5, the Redskins 5-5, and the Bills who are 5-5. Yes there are quite a few 500 teams, keep in mind however had the Cowboys lost to those 5-5 team they’d each be 6-4 teams.

It’s a rivalry game, and rivalry games are filled with more emotion than any other games in a season. They always make for the most interesting and most competitive games. So while some people might be ready to jump off the bus right now, don’t mind me if I keep my seat. The Cowboys are nine and one, when was the last time they held this record? For that matter, when was the last time they had such a clear cut winning record? Lets see how the Cowboys do this week against the Jets before jumping to conclusions.
