A Record Day of QB Changes Around the League

Grossman

Wednesday could have been a record day for QB changes around the NFL, as numerous teams made a switch to a new starter for the first time, or went back to a guy we’ve seen before. Below is a quick look at new signal callers for games this weekend.

David Garrard (Jaguars) – This one not a shock or anything, as Garrard was the starter from day one over Quinn Gray, and it was a matter of him getting healthy to get back on the field. Kudos to Gray, who went 2-1 in three games as the teams man under center. Should be interesting to see how close to 100 percent Garrard is.

Bryon Leftwich (Falcons) – The Falcons are still a bad team, despite two straight wins. This move is somewhat perplexing, as Joey Harrington has been the starter for their past two wins, and you’d think they would want him in there. For some reason this team feels that Leftwich gives them a better shot to win, which didn’t sit well Wednesday with Harrington when he found out the news.

Kyle Boller (Ravens) – This was a move that should have been made last week, as Steve McNair is clearly a QB on the decline. Boller has played okay for the most part in spot duty and one start this season, and should be able to move the ball Sunday vs Cleveland. The question will be does he keep the job long term?

Daunte Culpepper (Raiders) – Oakland has been in a free fall for weeks, and this spot is nothing more than to try and spark an offense that has not done much since week three. Culpepper may have some extra spunk since he’ll be playing his former team in Minnesota, and last time he played a former team the Raiders spanked the Dolphins. Get ready JaMarcus Russell.

Rex Grossman (Bears) – Will Rex-in-effect be back for the Bears? Or did the time on the bench finally give him a chance to soak somethings in and allow him time to get his head on straight? We’ll find out vs the Hawks in Seattle, but my guess is he will still have major ups and downs and the Bears will be QB shopping in the offseason.

J.P. Losman (Bills) – The Bills have been on a roll as of late, and despite some big struggles in Miami Sunday, Losman was able to get them in the end zone, a two-point conversion, and a field goal to beat the Fins 13-10. Trent Edwards played well in his time for the most part as the starting QB, but Dick Jauron wants to stay with the hot hand here, and I can’t blame him.

John Beck (Dolphins) – This was a move that also should have been made 2-3 weeks ago. Beck has been riding the pine, waiting his shot to get in the lineup, and finally Cam Cameron is giving in. Miami simply must see what they have in Beck, their second round draft pick, so they can gauge as well if they need to be on the lookout this offseason.

Brodie Croyle (Chiefs) – Tough spot for a guy to make your first pro start – in Indy vs the Colts who have dropped two straight. Plus no Larry Johnson, so Croyle, who was expected to be the opening day starter, is going to have to make plays for the Chiefs to somehow get a win. The team is anxious to see what they have in Croyle, so it’s up to him to deliver.
