McNair vs the Steelers

The Ravens will turn their offense over to Kyle Boller, as the Baltimore Sun is reporting that QB Steve McNair is going to miss the next two to three weeks after suffering a partial dislocation of his non-throwing shoulder Sunday in the loss to the Bengals. Head coach Brian Billick said that McNair’s shoulder keeps “popping in and out,” and that he’ll miss the next couple of games and it’ll be a few weeks before he starts practicing and then playing.

McNair has had what can be said as a difficult season for the 4-5 Ravens, as he has battled injuries for most of the year, and when he’s been able to play, he’s not played very well. He has thrown four picks has fumbled seven times and thrown just two TD’s this season. He has not thrown a TD pass since September 30th. Things were so bad for McNair Sunday in the teams 21-7 loss to the Bengals that he said he “probably would agree” if the coaches wanted to make a switch to Boller.

The team may want to start thinking about the future fast, and that future may be former Ohio State Buckeye Troy Smith, who will be the backup. Some thought that Smith might not even make the team after being drafted this past April, but showed enough near the end of camp to be given a roster spot. Another thought is that the QB they will play Sunday, Derek Anderson of the Browns, could be on the market after the season. Anderson is a restricted free agent, and if the Browns decide to allow him to test the market, the Ravens could be one team that takes a hard look at him.

For now, Boller is going to do what he can to salvage a Ravens season that is quickly slipping away. Two losses in the past two weeks to the Steelers and Bengals have put Baltimore clearly behind the 8-ball in the AFC North, and even further back in the AFC as far as a possible wild card playoff spot is concerned. This team needs to address a lot of issues, and the first and most important was with the poor play of McNair and the QB spot.
