Romo looks to throw

It was a close game in the first half. The NY Giants were able to tie the ball game going into the half leaving the scoreboard tied at 17. The New York Giants would only score three more points in the second half while Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, Tony Romo, and Wide Receiver, Terrell Owens, would hook up for two more touchdown passes to seal the game. This victory gives the Cowboys their first 8-1 record since Barry Switzer’s first year as a head coach.

Tony Romo’s 247 yards passing 4 TDs and only 1 interception proved too much for the NY Giants to contend with. While they were able to keep pace in the first half, their second half performance fell flat. The entire game was marred with penalties for both sides. A taunting penalty on the Cowboys gave the Giants excellent field position to score and ultimately tie the game. While in the second half a delay of game penalty and a holding penalty left the NY Giants with only a Field Goal, when the field position initially looked as though it would be a go-ahead touchdown.

While in the week one match up between these two teams it was Witten being the key player for the Cowboys and Shockey was the non factor for the Giants, this match up the roles were reversed. Jason Witten had had just two catches for 12 yards, while Jeremy Shockey lead the Giants in receptions and yards with 12 receptions for 129 yards and a TD. Despite Witten’s limited role, however, the Cowboys and Tony Romo had no problems finding targets to throw to. Terrell Owens lead the team with 6 receptions and 125 yards and two TDs while Patrick Crayton had 5 receptions for 65 yards and a TD.

Defensively it looked as though the Cowboys were going to be pushed around the entire game, giving up 17 points in the first quarter and not having much, if any, answer to Jeremy Shockey. The Cowboys tale of two halves continued again this week however, and the defense held the Giants to just a field goal scored early in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys had 5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Conversely the NFL’s leader in sacks, NY Giants, only had 2 sacks on Tony Romo and were only able to get one turn over in the game when Tony Romo threw an ill advised pass in the first half of the game.

The Dallas Cowboys now have essentially a three game lead in the NFC East, as they now have the head to head over the NY Giants. This win also ties them with first place in the NFC with the, also 8-1, NY Giants. The Cowboys will go on to play the Washington Redskins (5-4) next week at Texas Stadium. A win there will give the Cowboys a 4-0 record in the division.
