Just like the rest of his team that has suddenly risen from the ashes, Saints second-year wide out Marques Colston is putting together a heck of a season after being on the MIA list the first few weeks of 2007. Colston and the Saints offense is on fire, as they have been putting up the kind of numbers that we had become use to seeing back in 2006 when they advanced to the NFC Title game before losing to the Bears in Chicago. After starting off 0-4, the Saints have exploded, winning four straight and unless they fall asleep at the wheel, they should be 5-4 after they dispose of the winless Rams at home on Sunday at the Superdome.
As for Colston, he and QB Drew Brees have been two of the main reasons why the Saints are back in contention in the weak NFC. Colston currently has 44 catches for a team-leading 507 yards and five touchdowns. Consider that he only had 22 catches for 216 yards and one score when the team got off to their 0-4 start, it’s not hard to see why he’s getting the love again in the Big Easy. Against the Jags last week at home, Colston didn’t score, but hauled in a whopping 10 catches for 159 yards in the teams latest win, 41-24.
It was two weeks ago that he really started getting the headlines again, as the former 7th round draft pick torched the 49′ers for 8 catches for 85 yards and three scores. “We’re definitely feeling a lot more comfortable with the offense from week to week,” Colston said. “Our confidence continues to rise and we?re getting better and better.” Injuries early in the season to his back and knee may have hindered the 6-foot-4 wide out, but he refuses to use that as an excuse as to why he and the team started slow. “I’ve had some back problems, but I have to keep working through it,” said Colston. “I’ve got to continue to get better. It’s been pretty rough to this point, but you have to keep working.”
For now, the Saints are looking as dangerous as ever when the ball is in their hands. Brees has turned his season around, and with it, Coltson is now making big plays like he did in 2006. The team is 4th in the league with 267.1 yards per game passing, and it looks like the skies the limit for the Brees-Colston connection. “He’s been great, he’s a stud,” Brees said of Colston. “He’s a guy that we’re trying to find ways to get the ball to all the time. We’ve got a lot of weapons and I can’t say enough about those guys, but Colston is really coming along.”
