Beck

With the Miami Dolphins staring at one of the top three picks in April’s NFL Draft squarely in the face, the talk of the team over the past two weeks has been when to throw rookie QB John Beck into the mix.  The team has been starting Cleo Lemon, and while Lemon gave former starter Trent Green a run for his money in training camp, the QB has been pretty bad since taking over as the full-time starter.

With that comes the talk of starting Beck.  He’s the projected long term future of the team at QB, and the team used a high draft pick on the QB.  So why the holdup of putting him in as the starter?  Coach Cam Cameron for some reason still seems to feel that Lemon is the better of the two as they stand today.  “Number one, Cleo gives us, at this point in time, the best opportunity to win,” Cameron said Monday.  “And if in fact you make the change, has the person you put in earned that right?”

So while Cameron feels that Beck has yet to “earn the right” to start, one former Dolphin that thinks the time is better than ever to go to Beck is Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino.  ”I think that they need to see him play,” Marino said Monday about Beck starting.  ”I hope they win the next eight games, let’s put it that way, because I’m a positive guy, I would love to see them win eight games in a row. But you’ve got to take it the way it is, the reality.”

And the reality is the Dolphins may be lucky to win 2-3 games this season.  The attendance at home games is dwindling, the fan base is stagnant, and the team needs a shot in the arm.  Can Beck be that shot?  It may be the best option they have right now, and Cameron is pushing it on the back burner.  ”It’s obvious they’ve just got to rebuild, and it’s going to take some time,” Marino said. “Everybody’s just going to have to be patient.”  Rebuilding should start with Beck under center starting Sunday vs the Bills.
