Lions Slam Denver 44-7 to Improve to 6-2

Don’t look now, but the Detroit Lions are a team on a roll.  Once again on Sunday at home against the overmatched Denver Broncos, the Lions defense did in Denver in a route, winning 44-7 to improve to 6-2.  The win showed once again that the Lions are a team to be contended with, as they used a stifling defense led by Shaun Rogers who had 2.5 sacks and a pick that he took back 66 yards for a score that made it 36-0.  Jon Kitna led the Lions offense with 252 yards and two scores, playing mistake free ball.

The Broncos lost QB Jay Cutler early, as he left the game early in the second quarter with a lower leg injury.  His backup, Patrick Ramsey, threw for 262 yards and one score and a pick, but was held in check and pressured all day, much like the rest of the Denver offense.  After the Broncos topped the Steelers two weeks ago, they have lost two in a row and now are at 3-5.

Detroit led just 3-0 at the end of one, but then slowly started to build on their lead, and by the half led 16-0.  They used a big day from kicker Jason Hanson, who had three field goals, including a 53-yard boomer that made it 6-0.  Dewayne White made it 23-0 early in the third quarter with a fumble recovery of Ramsey for a score, and then Kitna put the game away as he hit Shaun McDonald for a 49-yard score with 6:35 to go in the third quarter to make it 30-0.

The Lions run defense also was on Sunday, as they held the Broncos to just 47 yards on 16 carries, a 2.9 yards per carry average.  As long as the Broncos are not getting much from their rushing game, wins are going to be hard to come by.  They continue to look like a team that has sparks of effort, but overall are not able to put together 60 minuets of good football. Sunday they didn’t put together five good minutes.

Next week the Lions are at Arizona to take on a struggling Cards team that has lost three straight.  The Broncos will play AFC West rival KC on the road next week.
