In what could be considered the second piece of good news to hit San Diego in the past 24 hours (the other being the San Diego Chargers’ 35-10 over the Houston Texans on Sunday), according to the Associated Press, the National Football League and the NFL Players Association have donated $250,000 to a relief fund to assist victims of the wildfires that have ravaged eastern and northern San Diego County.

The fund in question will be administered through by the San Diego Foundation, which will distribute donations throughout the county to assist with relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts. On Sunday, over $72,500 in donations was collected at Qualcomm Stadium from fans; those monies will go directly to the Salvation Army and families of injured firefighters. The NFL/NFLPA fund was created in 2001 originally to assist directly and indirectly organizations who were affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11.

Since its inception, the fund has also provided aid to victims affected by the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia and Hurricane Katrina. If you would like to donate to the relief effort currently underway in the San Diego area, please contact your local chapter or the national headquarters of the American Red Cross .
