Suspended Johnson to become a Cowboy?

DT Tank JohnsonThe Cowboys appear to be in need of a defensive tackle these days, especially in light of the fact that DT Jason Ferguson is out for the season with a torn biceps muscle, suffered in a Cowboys’ victory over the New York Giants in their season opener. According to a report filed by ESPN late Monday, former Chicago Bears DT Tank Johnson is close to signing a contract with the team; it could be signed as early as this week.

The only player of note who mans the DT position for the Cowboys is Jay Ratliff, but the rub there is that Ratliff’s natural position is defensive end, hence the possibility of the Johnson signing. Johnson told ESPN on Monday, “I’m here to work some things out. I’m looking here for a fresh start.” Assuming that Johnson is signed, he cannot begin workouts for the Cowboys until his suspension is completed; he has 5 weeks remaining.

The Cowboys’ possible signing of Johnson appears to be one of those “high-risk, high-reward” transactions, IMO. One would think that the Cowboys are well aware of Johnson’s past legal troubles (the 2-month jail sentence for a gun charge in late 2006, and the arrest for driving while impaired in Arizona back in June 2007). The Cowboys are going to have to continue their recent success on the field until Johnson’s suspension is over for this signing to possibly bear fruit. While it is true the Cowboys have given up 55 points in 2 games so far, they have their work cut out for them until Johnson is signed and activated around Week 7 or 8.
