Jets QB Clemens to start Sunday?

Kellen ClemensThe Jets, in light of the ankle injury suffered by their starting quarterback Chad Pennington last week against the New England Patriots, perhaps better have a Plan B in place. According to Dennis Waszak, Jr. of the Associated Press, there is the possibility of reserve QB Kellen Clemens getting his first career start against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Jets head coach Eric Mangini stated that he didn’t know the severity of the injury, telling AP, “It is the ankle, same as what was announced during the game. We’ll review it during the course of the week, like we do every injury situation.”

According to Clemens, he thinks that he can step in and be ready, by saying, “I prepare like I’m going to play, so if my number is called I give them the best opportunity to help the team win. I’m going to prepare as best as I can and try to be as ready as possible.” At least one of his teammates concurs with Clemens; Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery told AP, “I think Kellen is prepared. He’s prepared the entire offseason, so I wouldn’t expect a drop-off. I think we’ll be fine and we won’t have to make any adjustments, as far as receivers.”

From all accounts, Clemens had a very good preseason, going 30-for-41 for 364 and 4 touchdowns. However, he threw 2 interceptions but his ability this preseason to move the team down the field has apparently given the Jets some optimism should Pennington not be available this Sunday. Assuming he starts on Sunday, he faces one of the better defensive teams in the league in the Ravens. And from what I saw while watching the Jets-Patriots game, the way that Pennington took himself out of the game leads me to believe that Clemens will get the start.
