Samuel

The New England Patriots finally got their man. According to Len Pasquarelli of ESPN, the Patriots have activated cornerback Asante Samuel to the 53-man roster; this in effect makes him eligible to play this Sunday against the New York Jets. The Patriots, in keeping within the maximum player limit, released CB Tory James who had signed a 1-year contract back in April. Even with the activastion, it is not certain as to whether Samuel will be a starter on Sunday.

Samuel held out of the team’s offseason program, the minicamps and most of training camp before finally signing the Patriots’ franchise tender offer ($7.79 million this season). His holding out for so long makes one wonder what his degree of conditioning is and what his football preparation is looking like right now. Some positions don’t necessarily need to have all of that preparation – most defensive line positions would be a good example. But my take is that Samuel will not start on Sunday, but will contribute nonetheless against the Jets.
