Breaking Down the NFC East

mcnabb.jpg

The NFC East will be the most competitive and closest division this season, top to bottom, with two teams making the playoffs. 1 through 4 this division features a Super Bowl contender, a vastly, improved team, a still, mediocre team, and one squad who will disappoint more than any other team in the NFC as the most underachieving team in the NFL. In Philadelphia, the Eagles will be on top, as they have a legitimate shot to represent the NFC in Glendale, Washington will surprise many, having a good chance to win a playoff game and advance farther than many would say, New York will stay around the .500-mark (again), where they belong, and Dallas will fall flat on their face, sending fans home early in tears each Sunday from Texas Stadium, rounding out the division in the cellar. I have Washington and Dallas switching places in the standings from last year. I think this division will be the most exciting to watch because of all the rivalries within. All of these teams have great fans, home field advantages, and enough talent to finish atop the NFC East, but only one will – (Eagles) -Coaches Andy Reid and Jim Johnson will lead a group that consists of: Brian Dawkins, Donovan McNabb (Healthy), and Brian Westbrook; that could possibly have Philly going all the way to their first Super Bowl Championship, having the city of “Brotherly Love” prouder than ever. This division will have many different predictions, views, and insights from so-called experts all across the NFL, so let your voice/opinion be heard as you comment, after reading the #1 NFC East Preview.

1. Philadelphia Eagles 2007 Prediction: 13-3 – This is the year for the Eagles to shine and show the fans of Philly an NFL championship. The Eagles bring back all of their key/core players to the mix in ’07 and will continue to blitz early and often with an attacking defense led by playmaking SS Brian Dawkins. Dawkins is the heart and soul of a defense, which usually is a shoe-in for Top 3 in sacks. This defense has a strong secondary with ball hawking cornerbacks in Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown; their linebacking unit is solid with the new addition of Takeo Spikes, though they will miss Jeremiah Trotter. They have a deep, defensive line featuring quick, pass rushing ends Jevon Kearse, Trent Cole and Darren Howard. Their special teams are always a strength with the accurate leg of David Akers, another reason why the Eagles are favored to win the division again. All-Pro QB Donovan McNabb, who must stay healthy, drives the offense, and when he plays, McNabb is an MVP candidate and he is what makes the Eagles go. This offense is “ignited” by RB Brian Westbrook; he helps leads the attack motoring into the end zone 10-15 times a year. The offensive line is one of the best in the league and everyone starting is at least 320 pounds. The WR’s might be a question mark, but with productive TE L.J. Smith on the verge of making the Pro-Bowl and Westbrook, who is good for 70-80 catches, McNabb has many pass catching targets to throw to. Reggie Brown will lead the way like he did last season when he averaged close to 18 yards per reception, to go along with eight touchdowns. Speedy Kevin Curtis will give the offense a lift and young WR Hank Baskett will be a tall option for McNabb also. The Eagles might have the most balanced team in the NFC and they can compete with anyone. Philly will need to run the ball a little bit more and continue to keep bringing the pressure on the defensive side of the ball. McNabb will be ready at 100% for the regular season and will lead this team far into the playoffs.

2. Washington Redskins 2007 Prediction: 10-6 – The ‘Skins – like everyone knows – had a huge down year in ’06. They underachieved and were hit by the injuriy bug. Though they finished the season at 5-11, Washington found them a starting QB in Auburn’s Jason Campbell. He has the ability to lead Washington to a winning campaign and a playoff berth/victory. Campbell will need to improve on his completion percentage and start again where he finished off – during the last three weeks of the season. He shows poise, pocket presence, mobility, strong arm, and good accuracy to have Washington fans thinking post-season and football past December 30 (Week 17) in January. He is a leader on and off the field and will flourish starting the season from Week 1. Two 1,000-yard runners in Portis and Betts lead the Redskins on offense, giving them balance and the threat to catch defenses “napping” on pass-action passes deep. They are considered to be the best backfield combo next to San Diego’s and New Orleans’. This strong 1-2 punch will pay off and it will free up All-Pros Santana Moss and Chris Cooley for touchdowns and big gains. Both of these sure-handed catchers have the potential to get 75-80 receptions this season in Al Saunders’ offense. The offensive line is a huge plus being led by “hogs” Chris Samuels (hurt), Randy Thomas, and Jon Jansen. Gregg Williams runs a nice scheme with a very talented defense that has the capability to be Top 10 in the NFL. The safeties are both excellent hitters, (LSU Rookie LaRon Landry and Sean Taylor) as this secondary has one of the best in the league, with three capable starting corners to along with those two intimidating safeties. The defense also has enough linebackers to go 3-4 with London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, Rocky McIntosh, and LemarMarshall, all consistent at their positions. Overall, this team has the talent, game-breakers, speed at each position, and coaches to succeed in what could be Joe Gibbs’ final year on the sidelines for Washington. The results will show an exceeding of expectations for the ‘Skins, a big turnaround, making them a far cry from last season’s 5-11 ball club with little to cheer about. This team could have a complete 360-degree change going 11-5, and it would not shock me. Washington is in it to win it and they have the roster to make things happen in the NFC.

3. New York Giants 2007 Predictions: 8-8
– The New York Giants have a good enough football team to make some noise in the NFC East this season. Whether it is a “boom” or another “clank” that is the question. They have the offense to put up 25 points a game and a defense to give back 25 a contest. Many say they will be in for yet, another long, tumultous season under disgruntled Coach Tom Coughlin. Coughlin’s on the “Hot Seat” and his team will decide if he stays or if he returns to golfing and fishing (getting fired). Therefore, the Giants will lay it all out the line for Mr. Coughlin and try to make him a winner. New York will be at the .500-mark again and will just miss the playoffs this time around. RB Brandon Jacobs will put up gigantic numbers and become the feature back, replacing “HOF” runner Tiki Barber. He will make sure people forget the loss of Barber a little more then expected. Jacobs is a bruiser at 264 pounds and he can take over the main role, running the ball close to 25 times a game, scoring close to 15 touchdowns on the season (9 – in a limited role in ’06). This RB has pro-bowl caliber written all over him and he has the opportunity to showcase his skills. The offensive line does a good job opening holes and protecting the QB, and this will allow Eli Manning to have the time he needs back there to throw to Plaxico Burress, Jeremy Shockey, Sinorice Moss, Steve Smith, and Amani Toomer. Manning will need to step up and he should, as he improved both his completion percentage and QB rating last year. He has all the talent in the world and this is his year to prove to critics wrong and put up the Pro-Bowl #s that’s expectef rom him. New York will have to stop the run better and get some results from their interior d-line if they want to make push for the playoffs. Their LB’s are solid and they have one of, if not the best 1-2 punch at defensive end. Umenyiora, Strahan, Pierce, and Kiwanuka lead a front seven of the Giants, which makes it a strength for rushing the QB. New York selected CB Aaron Ross from Texas in the draft and he will add to an already physical set of corners of Sam Madison and Corey Webster. Safeties Will Demps and Gibril Wilson are an above-average pair of defensive backs that make the secondary a good one. The Giants this year will show us if they are for real, early in the first four weeks. As they face off with all three of their division rivals, with two on the road, (Dallas – Sunday Nite and Washington) capped off with a home game against Philly, Sunday Nite in Week 4. Right off the bat, New York fans will know surely what direction their team is heading, when the Giants have a chance to either “make” or “break” their ’07 season.

4. Dallas Cowboys Prediction: 6-10 – Ya’ll Cowboy fans must’ve thought I forgot ya’ll? This is not a joke… Well I didn’t forget ya’ll, as I really think “America’s Team” is heading in the wrong direction, predicting they will take up the rear in 2007. Dallas will go from second (making the playoffs) to worst (missing the playoffs – of course). The Cowboys are in for a long year under new Head Coach Wade Phillips because of a better division and a shaky starting QB. Some may disagree, but I think Dallas has the worst starting QB in the division. All who disagree with me now, will see why I boldly proclaimed this, when the season is over with, (by about Week 10 or 11) when hollywood-Romo is pulled, being benched because of lack of production or out due to injury (offensive line). Cowboy fans will see lots of Brad Johnson and little of successful Romo in ’07. Dallas fans may have something to look forward to with their 1-2 punch at RB, starting RB Marion Barber and Julius Jones, to along with young All-Pro OLB DeMarcus Ware, and big-hitting SS Roy Williams. Those players will not get ‘em far enough in the NFC East, as they will not make it back to post-season play in January. Romo fumbling the snap at Seattle for the potential, (thought-to be) game-winner will still be cemented in place, thought of over, and over again. Jerry Jones will be upset and Phillips might not last more than one year. Cowboy fans can set their calendar ahead for the new stadium and the 2008 NFL Draft when they get Cleveland’s “high” draft choice (a steal). The offense for Dallas is inconsistent and who knows what Owens will have in-store when the season goes south. The O-Line is slow and will not be able to protect the QB and the running game might have to carry the load more than ever. The defensive unit added Anthony Spencer to the 3-4 mix and should get plenty of sacks, teaming up with Ware, Spears, James, Canty and Co. in the front seven. Though they have an imposing front seven, the pass defense is a different story. They have talent in the secondary, but Roy Williams and Ken Hamlin are not coverage safeties – they are more known as hitters and run supporters. Dallas has pass rushers up front (d-line is bad vs. run) and run defenders in the backfield (awful in coverage). That will leave CB’s Anthony Henry and bust Terence Newman on an island alone, one-on-one against WR’s, being picked apart by opposing team’s offenses and QB’s. Dallas has a lot of depth behind their LB’s, but no depth elsewhere, especially in the secondary. This will be the problem for the talented, but over-priced defense that gave up around three touchdowns a game last year (close to 22 points per contest). Though they can score, they must be able to play better pass defense, as the D finished out the year handing out Christmas gifts with: 39 points at home to Detroit, 42 at home to N.O., and 28 to Atlanta. The keys to this year will be running the football (give Touchdown-machine Barber the ball more), time possession (defense is out there way too long), the offensive line (good enough in pass protection?), and of course the play of the inconsistent (reason to doubt) QB. Look for Dallas to have the type of season Washington put up and for them to enter into the sweepstakes for Louisville QB Brian Brohm, as a team looking for a Franchise QB with Cleveland’s projected (Top 5) high draft pick in ’08.

You’re an obvious “Skins” fan filled with bias spewing from your word-hole. :)

2. AF says:

Things like this, um, article are axactly why people can’t beleive anything they read on the Internet. I don’t think I’ve read a more uninformed, bias peice of garbage in my life.

My favorite team resides in the AFC, so I don’t even follow the NFC East that closely… but if you think Washington is going to be the best and Dallas the worst in that divison… not only do you have a terrible view of reality, but you also can’t write anything without letting your obvious bias for an aging Redskins team cloud your already poor judgement.

Good luck!

3. Russ Loede says:

Yo, I’m a Chicago BEARS Fan – hence the “BEARSgab.com”

I am the Main Site Editor/Writer for my BEARS. I am a “true” NFC fan and watch almost all of the games. I watch the NFC East all the time – those teams are always on the main market. Check my site out to read my articles and then “holler” at me on your comments. I knew I’d get a lot of comments from this NFC East Breadown/Preview – like I said in the opening, I was preparing/ready for it. I want lots of comments back and the opinions – from you the readers. I want to discuss what I think will happen this year and what will go down in the ’07 NFL campaign. I really believe Dallas and Washington are going in different directions, seperate ways, switching spots, and the Skins will improve vastly and surprise – while Dallas on the hand will falter and disappoint mightily this season. See that I’m not a bias writer ~ wrote “5 reason Bears won’t take home Vince Lombardi Trophy.”

I’m not a ‘Skins backer, even though I really like thier chances in ’07 as you can see. Predictions are supposed to be BOLD and This Is Definitely how I see the Division playing out. I would not write anything with out the knowledge and understanding of the division – I look at all the team closely – so don’t get me wrong on that point. It took a good amount of time and I liked the finished product. This piece I wrote was VERY INFORMED – how is it not?!? I gave great, deep, INSIGHT on ALL 4 teams – on how they will perform this year – what will be their reason to win and what will hold ‘em back. Come back to me in early NOVEMBER when I’m RIGHT and all of you will have to eat your words for all the comments you wrote back in August. You have to believe that I wrote this article based on the fact of how good the teams are, their off-seasons factored in, and the team’s strengths, weaknesses, and playmakers that will either carry ‘em far enough, or not as far enough as some would say – in this tough NFC East Division. Read it again and show some support, knowing this IS a great Preview and Breakdown of all 4 teams regardless the predicition of each team’s record.

4. Robert Stevens says:

Writing a bunch of gibberish doesn’t qualify as an analysis. You know what’s the difference between you and someone who’s in the Special Olympics? At the end of the day, you’re both still retarded. If you’re so confident about your excellent analysis, you’d surely have no problem putting a friendly wager on your prediction?

5. AF says:

Informed? Well, I won’t get into it here with you about it all… But I wonder what makes you think Campell is the Redskins next franchise QB and Romo will fail. Romo’s bobble? Campbell’s, er, lack of a bobble? Because if you watch both play last year, I don’t know how you can come to the conclusion that Jason will be much better than Tony. Or even as good.

A hunch? You like Gibbs better than Phillips? First round draft pick vs. undrafted free agent? Big school vs. Small School? OL?

From what I can tell, those would be really, the only reasons anyone would like Jason over Tony. Of course, those aren’t real reasons as many small school and lower rated prospects have proven over the years.

Frankly, you seem to be repeating what is vomited out by a lemmings like media that only reports things that are skin deep.

For Example: As an NFL fan, it doesn’t take a lot of watching, a huge brain or too much looking at stats to figure out that the reason Dallas faltered down the stretch was because its Defense crumbled the last quarter of the season. Romo was put in positions that he wouldn’t have been with a defense that could stop anyone. Yet, the media typically says Romo fell apart down the stretch, which isn’t how it happened. He tried to make too much happen (because the defense couldn’t stop anyone) and he made some mistakes. In certain passing situations, when the defense knows a pass is coming, as you know that makes things much more difficult for any QB.

Do you think it is only coincidence that Romo’s average games started happening during and after the Saint’s game when Sean Peyton showed everyone the blueprint for beating Dallas’ defense? I don’t. Teams scored a ton of points on Dallas from that point on – and Tony Romo was playing catch-up for the rest of the season. Heck, he still won some and led his team to the playoffs. He did lose the playoff game with his bobbled snap, but that has zero to do with his QB skills.

When his defense kept teams in check and he could run the gameplan, Romo was terrific.

Comparing the stats of the two QB’s there isn’t much to make anyone think Jason will have a better season than Romo. Look at KC joyner’s metrics and tell me Campbell is better.

I know, I know – stats aren’t everything. I understand. However in this case, stats jive with what our eyes told us: Romo was and is a very good QB who’s defense let him down at the end of the year. Campbell has yet to do anything to make anyone do anything other than hope he turns out good. Jasons stats aren’t good. His W – L record isn’t good. Frankly not much stands out about him other than playing in the SEC and being a first round draft pick.

Now, Dallas might not make the playoffs this year – but that shouldn’t be because of Romo. I think this season will show everyone that he did belong in last year’s Pro Bowl and he’s one of the top guys. Heck, he showed it last year. Campbell didn’t.

This will be Romo’s first year going into the offseason as the unquestioned starter, just like Campbell. So you should see a lot of improvement from both of their games. If both do improve on what they did last year (which I think they will), then Romo will still be better than Campbell. By far.

I admit, I’m not a Dallas fan – but I am a Romo fan. I think the guy is great and I followed him closely last year.

It’s actually possible That both QB’s will be better this year and both help their team’s win. I don’t neccessarily think Jason won’t do well. I just think that Romo will show up much better this year.

You think otherwise and that’s fine. We will see soon who’s right.

By the way, before you say Romo is going to crash this year (and publish some predictions) – you should maybe check up on how he’s looking so far in Dallas’ training camp.

Bear’s fan, huh? Congrats on last year. Heck of a defense. I have some buddy’s who are Bear fans. They hate Romo and said no way he is better than Grossman. They say all the time how he was a fluke – but then they’re biased against him. They think Grossman should have gone to the Pro Bowl. Probably why I learned to like Romo, watch his games and keep up with him.

Good luck to you.

6. Greek Mike says:

Oh my, how dare he make a prediction that doesn’t curtail to your beliefs? Get over it, an opinion is nothing more and nothing less than… an OPINION.

7. Russ Loede says:

THANKS for the back-up on that one “Greek Mike”
You’re right on the money w / that comment -
“Opinion – nothing more, nothing less, just an OPINION.”

As for AF – Thanks for the comment back, it was a good one and I understand your point – great post – I just think Campbell is going to be a star and has the poise, cool, and pocket presence among many other skills – not mentioning his arm strength, mobility, and accuracy for such a young QB. He has it all to become an All-Pro QB – I just don’t like Romo (something about him) he doesn’t have the patience/ “cool” and he will not have a better year or career than Campbell. He will not because
A. Overall – Campbell’s better (opinion) and will only get better * Much younger also *
B. Too much of high expectations for Romo like Rex has in Chicago for the BEARS.
C. I’d even take Campbell over Grossman … for that matter/debate – but Dallas is just too inconsistent on D and as a team, they’re up and down, I think Washington’s team and D will be more consistent this season, helping a young QB in Campbell, having a better record when it’s all said and done – that’s my honest opinion – and like you said – If you want to get into a lot – I’ll do it in an e-mail discussion – not on the boards – Campbell is simply the better “signal caller” than Romo and that’s that – period. I have a “good feeling” about Campbell succeeding in Wsh. and I think Romo will fail in Dallas.
End of story.

8. Russ Loede says:

Romo – terrific?!? – for maybe a couple of games at best – maybe 3 or 4 games – if you want to say that.
He came into a perfect, ideal situation when Bledsoe was stinking up the joint – he had no pressure on him at first (nothing to lose – an undrafted free agent – who made his way up) – now he has a lot of it resting on his shoulders and it will be there the rest of the time he is in Dallas – he will be under scrutiny – and under the spotlight/microscope – everyone will be cricizing him not matter what – he will be the reason they lose – so they say… Teams caught up to him and figured him out. Dallas’ problems are mainly the D – you are right about that – but the big “onus” and pointing of fingers always, always goes to the QB. I know – with the performance/lack of play by # 8 in the Super Bowl for the BEARS – though the run D was horrendous – the QB gets the big blame – 90-95 % of the time – that’s just how it will always be. And if the BEARS win – it’s not the QB – it’s the run game, other players catching the ball, or the defense , that’s just how the football media is – let’s face it.

9. Russ Loede says:

Stevens: Put the money on the wood- and make the wood look good – like someone I know Always says… – “Mr. Expert analysis, guy himself.” – what is your predicition ?

And think before you write also – before you make a FOOL out of yourself, like you just did in that comment!

I’m a good writer and call how I see it – and I’ve made good insight on all 4 teams – I just think the results/standings are going to be different in ’07, there will be some major changes, in my opinion – is that alright Sir? Sorry, I did not ask for your permission, I’ll talk to you first Sir – next time.

What do you think? Really, I want to hear what you have to see Mr. “Wise Guy” – “I know Football Inside and Out”
- Why don’t you write and give us your second “version” – a “revised” edition that is – on the NFC East – (so all of us can laugh at it here @ NFLGridIronGab.Com)…

There is nothing wrong with some intersting, unique viewpoints / intriguing thoughts/predictions for the upcoming NFL Season in 2007 – it’s what makes it fun – it may not mean much – but I did a Breakdown/Preview on the division and I’ll stand by what I said – like a man – and will either take the criticism dished/handed out to me or the congrats from all of you and the end of the year (or halfway point of the year – when ya’ll Dallas fans realize I’m right and give me my “Props” that will be defeinitely deserved and due to my office when I’m correct. You have to show more respect because I’ve earned it Sir, and next time back up your comments because I’d like to fire back and keep you in line Sir.

Gibberish – is what comes out of your posts – not mine Sir – you have the two mixed up Sir.
THANK You
And I’ll take just a small, little apology letter and comment saying I was right when 2007 comes to a close. THANKS Again Sir!!!

10. AF says:

Greek Mike:

I have no problem with his opinion. Why do you have a problem with mine?

“Curtail to my beliefs?” You sure you meant to use curtail? Conform, perhaps? *shrug*

Thanks for your input to the conversation, though!

11. Russ Loede says:

12. AF says:

So, you basically have a hunch that Romo will fail this season and that Campbell will do very well?

* You said that Campbell will only get better… but what do you think Romo has been doing? He was at every practice, every OTA, and every mini-camp the Cowboys had before training camp. He has thrown with the WR’s even on days that there was no practice or any structured workouts. He hasn’t missed any time whatsoever. As a matter of fact, Wade Phillips said that Romo was at Valley Ranch more than any other player.

So Romo’s vacations were well publicised. Big deal. All players take vacations in the summer. I don’t see anyone saying anything about Campbell making commercials this summer and yet he did. Romo judges the Miss Universe contest (a one night event) and everyone says he’s not working. Please.

He judged that contest, took the red-eye back to Dallas and was on hand for the first day of mini-camp at 7:00 am. Never missed a second ot anything team related this year.

Like I mentioned to you earlier… you might want to take a look at some reports on Tony before you rush to any judgements. All reports are that he is looking extremely good.

I read one article about Tony today from a notoriously negative Dallas reporter. This guy typically goes out of his way to write doom and gloom about the Cowboys. I don’t know if he doesn’t like them, over-compensates so he doesn’t look like a homer, or simply is a glass is half empty kind of guy… but he hardly ever says very much positive about the home team. Anyway today he writes about Tony: “Tony Romo: Trust me, this kid’s the real deal. He’s headed for a big pay day and another trip to the Pro Bowl.”

Now that doesn’t mean it’s true… but every single account of Romo since training camp started has been very similar to that. Every one. The Dallas Morning News beat writer (Tim MacMahon), who also usually makes jokes about the Cowboys and always finds something negative to say, wrote that Romo is looking Razor sharp. He also brashly, (and somewhat unusually for him) predicted that this year Tony Romo will break the Dallas Cowboys record for passing yards and touchdowns this year. That isn’t like his usual negative self… but he even said that it isn’t that bold of a prediction “after watching all of Tony’s practices”.

Again, that doesn’t mean it’s going to play out that way – but, as the old saying goes, where there’s smoke… there’s fire. Everyone who has seen Romo working with the team in this year’s training camp has gushed about how great he looks and how precise his passes have been.

I know it doesn’t mean it’ll happen… but he sure looked pretty good coming in cold last year, with hardly any snaps all season (and training camp). With a whole year to work as the starter, and him looking better than he ever has before… he might not be quite the shoe-in for the losers hall of fame that so many anti-Romo fans have tried to induct him in.

* Campell is “much younger” you say?
Jason Campbell – DOB: 12/31/1981

Tony Romo – DOB: 02/21/1980

What’s that? About a year and a half? Yep… Oh well, I suppose that Romo just went into the NFL at a younger age.

I understand that this is an opinion piece… but really, you should check easy things like DOB.

* You said, “Too much of high expectations for Romo like Rex has in Chicago.” Tony Romo proved one thing, as far as I’m concerned, last year: That he could perform under pressure. I read where his passer rating was the highest in the 4th quarter. The coaches and all his teammates have said that Romo has proven himself under pressure and that they trust him.

Heck, even Jean Jacques Taylor, columnist for The Dallas Morning News, who almost never says anything good about the Cowboys wrote this in yesterday’s newspaper: “In the fourth quarter, when the Cowboys were ahead or behind by seven points, romo completed 33 of 43 passes for 512 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. When the pressure is high, Romo performs. It doesn’t mean the Cowboys always win, but it does mean Romo puts them in position to win.”

That is quite a ringing endorsement from someone who almost never throws out compliments to any Cowboy players. He goes on to mention that “Tony led fourth-quarter drives that put the cowboys ahead for good or clinched victories against Indiamapolis, the New York Giants and Atlanta. He put the cowboys in position to win or tie games late in the fourth-quarter against Washington, Detroit and Seattle.” The defense or special teams let him down in those three losses. Shoot, he scored 31 points against Detroit, even on a bad day (for him)… the defense just couldn’t keep Detroit from scoring. The Washington game was the freak field goal block and subsequent 15 yard facemask in a tied game with 0:05 on the clock, that wouldn’t happen again in ten years. We all know what happened in Seattle.

Taylor writes that what makes romo a difference maker is his “moxie, gumption or chutzpah”. He continues writing, “Not every QB can handle the pressure of the fourth-quarter. Some fold. Others, like Romo, embrace the moment. You can’t teach that kind of confidence. That’s what sets him apart from others.”

I could find plenty of other writers to agree that if Tony proved anything, it was that he can perform under pressure. However, there are just too many. The point is, everyone is clear that Romo’s intagibles under pressure are exactly what you want from your QB.

I know this is way too long, so I won’t get much into numbers. Most stats, like I mentioned before, are only a small part of the story. However a few, like the fourth-quarter numbers for Tony are meaningful. I’ll list just a couple:

Completion percentage. Most agree that this is important for QB’s.

Romo: 65.3%
Campbell: 53.1

Yards per attempt:

Romo: 8.61
Campbell: 6.27

QB rating:

Romo: 95.1
Campbell: 76.5

Those stats are the one’s that typically are considered some of the more imprtant for QB’s. I agree. Looking at them, there isn’t much argument about who was the better player last year.

This year is a new one. If they both improve though then Campbell may approach what Romo did last year. Tony will be in another stratosphere though, if he improves too much.

I know you think Jason will play better than Tony. You also know that I think Romo will be the better of the two. I can live with that. I’ll admit if I’m wrong, and I could be. I just don’t think I will be. There’s just too much that says Romo will be a very good one.

Oh Well, (with apologies to Chris Berman and Tom Jackson), that’s why they play the games. As my grandfather used to say: “well just see what we can see.”

13. Russ Loede says:

You are toooooooooooo GOOD !
We need you to WRITE For the Site – I Must Admit you are “right on the money” – so to say – with the accurate research, information, and stats. Your numbers and refrences to writers is excellent. Your insight is phenomonal and you took me to school and back on that one. Thanks for the Comment.
You Win.

But I’m still sticking with Campbell – this is my “GUT” Feeling. They say not to go with your heart but w / your head (or other way around?) – This one I’m going w / Campbell. I also think you have to watch Romo in the pre-season at least – before they/you crown him the best QB (joking) – sounds like he’s doing really well – but they’re saying the same exact things for #8 (Rex) also – I don’t buy what they are selling (so-to-say) until I see the finished product in an actual “real” contact, football game v. another team

– I just like what Campbell brings to the table more than Romo & Rex. Sorry, with the DOB thing – I usually look at things like that very closely (It’s Important and I’m usually ALL Over that type of small-stuff) – I have notes by the side, when writing articles ~ but I was in a hurry kind of – would’ve looked it up if it was an article posted – that I was going to put on the MAIN Site … I knew the difference was not that big and sorry for the mistake – I thought twice about posting that comment (knowing in my mind I was likely to be incorrect – and someone – like (you) would pick up on it nicely, and you did -Thanks-) I Will remember next time and check it extra making sure of my comments to be correct, with the info along with it.
Anyways, I like your enthusiasm and love/passion for the game. You’re there in a “rare company” of “TRUE” Football Fans/Purists. Keep up the good work – I sometimes get carried away w / the long article/posts too … (look at some of my articles compared to others) … (ha) Thanks for the “schooling” and I NOW will Absolutely keep a close/keen EYE on this situation/player battle between Campbell & Romo ~ to see who’s RIGHT and who does BETTER. “May the Best Man (QB) Win!”

AF, this is what you said:
Things like this, um, article are axactly why people can’t beleive anything they read on the Internet. I don’t think I’ve read a more uninformed, bias peice of garbage in my life.

My favorite team resides in the AFC, so I don’t even follow the NFC East that closely: but if you think Washington is going to be the best and Dallas the worst in that divison: not only do you have a terrible view of reality, but you also can’t write anything without letting your obvious bias for an aging Redskins team cloud your already poor judgement.

Good luck!

So yeah, I don’t respect your opinion. I don’t need to contribute to an article that isn’t based on fact (unless you have Biff’s Sports Almanac)… I’m not going to change the guys mind, and besides both you guys have valid points (your second one at least). Truth of the matter is, the division will come down to what it always does: injuries.

So yeah, no ones asking you to conform or beleive axactly what he says on the internets.

Fucktard.

17. Cowboy Blog says:

I think you are right on the money about Romo. If you read my blog, you see that I predicted that the Cowboy Boo Birds will get rid of Romo during October.

God knows that I’m not a Tony Romo fan, but the boys will have to completely fall apart to only win six games. I dont think Romo can beat the good teams on the schedule, but six wins a tad to low.

There is to much talent on this team for that to happen. All Romo has to do is limit his mistakes and the Cowboys will beat the bad teams on their schedule.

Besides, I think the Redskins are way to bad to win 10 games.

25. MW says:

Cowboys entering the Brian Brohm sweepstakes? LOL. Every single line of that Cowboys prediction is so off-base, I almost laughed out loud reading it.

Just flip the standings around, leave the predicted records in place for each spot, and you miiiiiiiight be on to something.

26. Kevin Stone says:

Wow…this has got to be the worst prediction in the history of predictions. You have the entire division completely backwards. How much more wrong could you be so far???

27. Mike says:

High comedy. You were right about one thing, though. Romo was benched and Brad Johnson saw quite a bit of time…in mop up duty.

Sorry, dude. Way off on this one.

Hope you didn’t put the kids’ college fund on these predictions, there, Chief.

………………

………I’ll stand by what I said – like a man – and will either take the criticism dished/handed out to me or the congrats from all of you and the end of the year (or halfway point of the year – when ya’ll Dallas fans realize I’m right and give me my “Props” that will be defeinitely deserved and due to my office when I’m correct. You have to show more respect because I’ve earned it Sir, and next time back up your comments because I’d like to fire back and keep you in line Sir.

36. Gravypan says:

Some may disagree, but I think Dallas has the worst starting QB in the division.

Good thing you’re not an NFL scout, Russ.

PS Did you kidnap Greggo?

37. Jerry says:

Even the prediction about Clevelands 1st round pick the Cowboys got is wrong :(

38. Brocktoon says:

That was, really, well-written, too.

You, obviously know how to, use commas, correctly.

39. Crazy Ray says:

This site has become quite the laughing stock in the Dallas area making its way around. Of course this is just the opinion of one lone spare who doesn’t know near enough about the game (too blinded as a fan to see straight).

The Cowboys may not be THE team this year, but they’re up there. To dismiss Romo in such ignorant fashion showed you didn’t really watch the kid play or you were simply so biased you couldn’t see the potential he had. He’s no Brady or Manning, but far better than anything else we’ve had since Aikman left.

This is an epic failure of predictions though. Its one thing to be a little off. This is like such a loss that you don’t deserve to ever offer an opinion again.

43. Jethro Q Walrustitty says:

“Some may disagree, but I think Dallas has the worst starting QB in the division.” Some may disagree, but I think my butthole smells like roses!

“All who disagree with me now, will see why I boldly proclaimed this, when the season is over with, (by about Week 10 or 11) when hollywood-Romo is pulled, being benched because of lack of production or out due to injury (offensive line). Cowboy fans will see lots of Brad Johnson and little of successful Romo in ’07″ MY GOD YOU ARE RIGHT!!!! DId you see it? by the end of the game, the dallas coaching staff was soooo sick of Romo’s insisting that he take the offense down the field and score points that they pulled him in the 4th quarter and put Brad Johnson in. Will we see Romo and his highest QB rating in the NFC again this year? guess we have to wait until Sunday and find out.

“The O-Line is slow and will not be able to protect the QB and the running game might have to carry the load more than ever”
Unfortunatly for the Eagles last week, the slow O-line confused the Philly D line “which usually is a shoe-in for Top 3 in sacks”…to the point that they didnt touch Romo (or brad johnson…)

“Romo fumbling the snap at Seattle for the potential, (thought-to be) game-winner will still be cemented in place, thought of over, and over again.” Tony has 67 million reasons to forget that snap.

“McNabb is an MVP candidate and he is what makes the Eagles go”
Doesn’t someone @ ESPM or NAACP owe Rush Limbaugh and apology right about now?
