The Bengals have suffered a season ending injury, as second-round pick, running backIrons Kenny Irons will be out for the year after tearing a knee ligament in Thursday’s preseason loss at Detroit.  The Auburn back went to the locker room on a cart and was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee.  He is expected to make a full recovery and be back on the field by next spring.

Irons was expected to be in the mix as far as backing up feature back Rudi Johnson was concerned.  During the preseason outing, Irons ran for 17 yards, including a long gain of 11 yards.  Last week he ran for 65 yards on 10 carries in an intersquad scrimmage.  He was a stud back in college, as he ran for 108 yards per game in 2005.  Last season he was banged up, and ran for 893 yards.

The Bengals running back depth now is down to Kenny Watson, who is basically a third-down back, and Quincy Wilson, who has just two carries in his NFL career.  The team also grabbed Curtis Brown after he was cut by the Raiders before training camp started.  Their best option would be Chris Perry, the teams number one pick in 2004, but he can’t stay on the field, as he is on the PUP list after anke surgery.
