Colts Terminate the Contract of Corey Simon

The Colts did a move today that was not exactly unexpected, as they terminated theSimon contract of veteran defensive tackle Corey Simon.  The rumors of the release of Simon has been coming for weeks, and finally on Saturday the team announced following a scrimmage that Simon’s contract was terminated.  On Wednesday Colts owner Jim Irsay had said that he expected to release the former Pro Bowl tackle within a few days.  Simon failed a physical last weekend, basically sealing his fate.

He was expected to report to camp on time July 29 but was never seen at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.  Simon did not play last season and was placed on the non-football illness/injury list with an undisclosed ailment. Two seasons ago in what ended up being his only season on the field with the Colts, Simon played in 13 games, gaining 34 tackles, no sacks.  He came to the Colts after five seasons with the Eagles.  His best season came in his rookie season of 2000, when he played in all 16 games, with 52 tackles and 9.5 sacks.

The Colts, who signed Simon to a five-year, $30 million contract, ended up paying him more than $14 million in bonuses and salaries.  The 30-year-old now becomes an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with another team in the league. He has indicated that he would like to resume his career with another team, and will shop his services around to find the best fit and the biggest contract.
