Bears Quickly Sign Walker to Five-Year Deal

WalkerThe Bears didn’t seem to want to wait to wrap up their newly acquired defensive tackle for a couple of years.  The team on Tuesday announced that they have signed DT Darwin Walker to a five-year deal worth $25 million.  The deal came down just two days after Walker was traded from the Bills to the Bears.

“This is great, and I’m just excited to be a Bear,” Walker said after practice Tuesday night. “And I look forward to trying to get to the Super Bowl.”  Walker was one of the more interesting stories this past offseason.  He came to the Bills in a trade from Philly, but refused to play for them unless they gave him a new deal.  He was set to make $1.3 mil this year and $1.4 next.

Buffalo took a hard stance against giving Walker a new deal, and instead of reversing the trade that sent him to the Bills and allowing him to go back to Philly, instead the team worked out a deal with the Bears.  Walker, now jolly and happy, said he would have taken just a one-year deal from Chicago.  “We’d have just taken a one-year deal and done what we had to do,” Walker said. “Fortunately, the Bears saw it a little different, and we’re excited about that.”

Getting Walker is big for Chicago, as it right away fills the hole that was left when the team let go of six-shooter Tank Johnson.  Walker has 26.5 sacks over the past five seasons, making him a player that is actually better than Johnson.  Walker had been looking at Chicago last spring when the Eagles allowed him to look for a trade.  Instead he was in Buffalo, where he held the team hostage until they were eventually forced to trade him away.
