Giants, Jets Nix Dome Proposal

Giants StadiumThe ongoing disagreement between the New York Jets, New York Giants, and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority regarding putting a roof on the new stadium at The Meadowlands does not appear to have a resolution at hand at the moment.  Both teams stated that they do not want a roof on their facility no matter what the cost is.

Those comments came after the state of New Jersey determined that the cost of a roof for the $1.2 billion stadium would cost around $421 million (not including heating and air conditioning).  Both teams, from the beginning, have resisted having a roof added, saying that they prefer the cold-weather home field advantage.  However, the NJSEA wanted a formal accounting of the proposed project.  Yesterday, Carl Goldberg, the Authority’s chairman, stated that the $160,000 study was a worthwhile investment in order to gauge interest in getting a future Super Bowl to the stadium.

This appears to be cut and dried….to an extent.  I can understand why both teams want an open-air facility.  There would appear to be an advantage for the home team playing on any given week.  And in fact, money would be saved by not adding a retractable roof. On the other hand, it is common knowledge that New York (New Jersey) has wanted a Super Bowl at the Meadowlands for some time.  It is hard to say if there’s a happy medium in this sticky situation, as i do not think even a mediator can solve this one.  But i wouldn’t be too surprised if the Authority gets their way on this.
