We may be close to a breakthrough in the Bears-Lance Briggs saga. David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune reports that there’s a high possibility that the Bears LB linebacker will sign a one-year, $7.2 million tender and arrive to camp. There is some conflicting information, however. Attempts to reach Briggs on his cell phone only got a “No comment”. On the other hand, a teammate of Briggs stated that he did in fact agree to sign the deal and avoid a holdout – one which the Bears have been trying to avoid.
Also, the Bears are saying that recent discussions keep a ray of hope alive that Briggs will sign a deal so he can arrive at camp relatively soon. I guess if anything, it is a matter of who you want to believe – Briggs’ teammate, the Bears’ front office, or outside sources. Perhaps the definitively statement will come from none other than Briggs’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who by the way, could not be reached for comment. For Briggs’ and the Bears’ sake, a deal needs to be inked ASAP. There’s only a limited time to get this done, and now is that time.
