Veteran WR McCardell Signs with Texans
Posted by Russell Loede under Houston Texans
Â
The Houston Texans have signed unrestricted free-agent wide receiver Keenan McCardell (San Diego Chargers). McCardell played last season with the Chargers, recording 36 receptions for 437 receiving yards, but zero touchdowns. He missed two games last season because of a calf injury. San Diego released McCardell in early March.
Houston will use McCardell as a starter opposite Pro-Bowl wide receiver Andre Johnson. Wide receivers Kevin Walter and Bethel Johnson were two options for the starting job before the team inked McCardell. Does he have the wheels to continue playing? His days as a productive receiver have long been over, and the No. 2 in the Houston offense has been unable to produce quality numbers. Last season, WR Eric Moulds caught 57 passes for 557 yards, scoring only one touchdown for Houston in that role.
As he will likely be starting for the Texans, don’t think McCardell will be keeping the double-teams away from former Hurricane standout Andre Johnson. At the old age of 37, this once 12th round draft selection of Washington out of UNLV, returns home to Houston,Texas. This Runnin’ or Walkin’ Rebel, has played a great NFL career of 861 receptions, for over 11,000 yards, and 62 touchdowns. Keenan has gone for 85 or more catches four times and over 1,100 yards five times during his illustrious NFL run.Â
Houston we have a problem: Texans offense is “Officially” desperate for another WR next to star Andre Johnson. It’s been a major problem for a quite a while and the search is finished, but will it be successful? McCardell, though his declining play, is still a sure upgrade over Bethel Johnson and Kevin Walter.

Veteran WR McCardell signs with the Texans and will compete for a roster spot, He is in the same boat as everybody else is at this point. With his experience one would hope he would win that spot on the team early in the preseason but we will have to wait and see.
