New Home For Favre Should Be Retirement Home
Posted by Jeff Sack under Green Bay Packers, NFL

So now Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre says his emotions got the best of him and he never really wanted to be traded from the Packers anyways, and it was just his competitive nature coming out. All this was brought about by the New England Patriots acquisition of Oakland Raiders wide receiver and NFL “problem child” Randy Moss on draft day. Favre said the deal was a steal and the fact that the Packers did not go after him, showed they weren’t really serious about contending while he is still at the reins on the field. Favre said he did not have time for a five year plan. No kidding Brett, you don’t have time for a one year plan, the fact of the matter is you should have hung it up after the 2004 season.
I have never been one to be afraid to say the emperor wears no clothes, and I am not about to start being tentative about expressing my opinion in this matter. I realize that suggesting that Brett Favre should retire will be considered blasphemy by many of my peers in the media, as well as among NFL Players and fans. But the bottom line is this, injuries have taken a toll on Favre, and he is now just a shadow of the effective quarterback he was through the 2004 campaign. Just look at the numbers, Favre had a quarterback rating of over 92 % in 2004, in 2005 less than 71% and in 2006 less than 73 %. Although throughout his NFL career he has always thrown double digit interceptions per season.
Except for the aberration that was 1999, they were always more than offset by his touchdowns. Some years he would even throw twice the amount of touchdowns to interceptions! Not the last two years, 2006 18 picks, 18 TD’s, in 2005 he only threw 20 TD’s yet threw 29 interceptions. Sorry Brett, Randy Moss is not going to help those numbers.
Brett Favre has had a Hall of Fame NFL career, but like many athletes before him he is withering away before our eyes, and taking some of that lustre with him. My friend, and colleague Matt Loede said in a recent article, that when people see the Green bay packers play you think Brett Favre. Well, Matt I have some years on you, and when I think of the Green Bay Packers, I think of Bart Starr, and Vince Lomabradi. Starr got out after an injury plagued 1971 season, he did not try to hang on. Lombardi left the Packers at their pinnacle, right after winning back to back Super Bowls! That is part of the reason, that well after 30 years after his death he still holds a fascination for NFL fans. It’s always better to go out on top. Unfortunately, too many athletes stay too long at the fair. For Favre he should have got off the Merry-go-round in 2004.

I’m not a big Favre fan, but you seem to forgat that Aaron Rodgers is the Packers option. I think an aged Brett Favre is more productive than 2005’s version of Brady Quinn, Ken Dorsey, or Rick Mirer.
I agree. He should have retired a few years ago. His ego has the best of him and any thought that the he is going to attend another Super Bowl as a player is just fantasy!
You must be an angry bear or dolphin fan. What an idiot, boy did he prove you wrong. This just shows what you write is ignorant!
